2 Summit Borrowing  request from Record display or Holdings display

3

4 Summit Borrowing  request from Record display or Holdings display  requestable: status “available”  status  IType mapped to 200 or 202

5 Requestable? status status is not

6 Requestable? status is not

7 Requestable? IType mapped to 200 or 202? status code & IType = 201 status code

8 When there’s a VOL field: extra step

9 Differentiating items Various methods are used to differentiate items attached to the same bib. record: Copy number (for the same thing) Call number Barcode Location code Note or message Volume field

10 Copy number  Copy number is usually used to identify different copies of the same entity  COPY# field in item record  for example: LB1027.T53 LB1027.T53 cop.2 LB1027.T53 cop.3

11 Copy number LB1027.T53 LB1027.T53 cop.2 LB1027.T53 cop.3 I1395880x ITEM Information COP: 2 PATRON#: 0 RECAL DATE: - - INTL USE : 0 ICODE1: 0 LPATRON: 0 TOT CHKOUT: 1 COPY USE: 0 ICODE2: - LCH:02-29-04 18:12 TOT RENEW: 1 IMESSAGE: I TYPE: 0 INVDA: 0 LOCATION: orum OPACMSG: PRICE: $0.00 # RENEWALS: 0 LOANRULE: 0 YTDCIRC: 0 OUT DATE: - - # OVERDUE: 0 STATUS: - LYCIRC: 1 DUE DATE: - - ODUE DATE: - - BARCD 35025005010117

12 Call number  Call number is usually the “address” … where to find the item  Use item call numbers when the “call number” for that item is different than the base classification number in the bib. record

13 Call number  Some members use CALL NUMBERS to distinguish different items in a different format. 3 examples: Lib.A ML195.R68 1997 COM DSK NORTON 2 Lib.C LT2100.H232 A94a 2004 t/res LT2100.H232 A94b 2004 txt/stu Lib.B ML195.R68 1997 Compact disc CD138

14 Location  Sometimes the same call number is used on more than one item, and it’s the LOCATION code that makes the difference.

15 Location B1621626x BIBLIOGRAPHIC Information CALL NUMBER QM23.2.G73 1973c TITLE Gray's anatomy / edited by Roger Warwick, Peter L. 16 16 Note or message NoteMessage  Sometimes the Note or Message field provides information that helps identify the item  Sometimes used alone, sometimes in addition to Call no. or VOL field  for example: ATTN CIRC: count 1 bk., 1 disc Check for 1 CD-ROM in back pocket.

17 Differentiating items Only one method signals Summit to offer a choice to the patron: Copy number (for the same thing) Call number Barcode Location code Note or message Volume field

18 VOL field  Data from VOL field displays in “Call number and holdings” column  The VOL (volume) field in the item record is usually used to distinguish different items  a standard volume designator is often used, but may vary from one library to another  for example: Lib.A v.1 v.2 v.3 app. Lib.B vol.1 vol.2 vol.3 Appendix Lib.C V1 V2 V3 APP.

28 Summary:  There are several ways used to differentiate items  Not all are understood by other members  Catalog display usually but not always matches items  Only one method signals Summit to offer a choice to the patron Copy number (for the same thing) Call number Barcode Location code Note or message Volume field
