3 Remember: Common nouns name any person, place, thing, or idea. ie My sister Mary ate all of the cookies. My sister Mary ate all of the cookies. Chris Drury plays on a hockey team. Find the common nouns: Chris Drury plays on a hockey team. The biggest football game of the year is the Super Bowl.

4 And … specific Proper nouns name a specific person, place, thing, or idea. ie My sister Mary ate all of the cookies. My sister Mary ate all of the cookies. Chris Drury plays on a hockey team. Find the proper nouns: Chris Drury plays on a hockey team. The biggest football game of the year is the Super Bowl.

5 So what is a plural noun? A noun that names two or more persons, places, things, or ideas. children fingers cookies pigtails glasses girls

6 Plural rules: If a singular noun ends with s, ss, x, ch, sh, or z add es to form the plural. inch - inches dress box - dresses - boxes

7 More plural rules : If a singular noun ends with a consonant and y, change the y to i and add es. baby - babies lady - ladies story- stories

8 More plural rules : If the noun ends with a vowel and y, just add s. toy - toys boy - boys kid- kids

9 Still more plural rules: Some nouns change form completely. child - children tooth - teeth foot- feet

10 Confused Yet? Some nouns have the same form for both singular and plural. fish - fish deer - deer

11 A final plural rule: Some singular nouns ending in f or fe change the f to v and add s or es to form the plural. leaf - leaves thief- thieves

12 Let’s form some plurals: box- boxes family- families bush- bushes shelf- shelves tray- trays bakery- bakeries knife- knives church- churches
