Of course we do not want to share everything with everybody Students should not have access to teacher files and teachers should not have access to school administrator files.

We can solve the security and sharing problem by setting up groups. We will set-up three groups at our school, school administrators, teachers and students. School Administrators Teachers Students

School Administrators TeachersStudents We next set-up a User Account for each person who is going to use the network. We also designate which groups each user will belong to. The system is flexible and users may belong to multiple groups. User Acct Maria Lopez, Principal Groups Member of: School Administrators Teachers Students User Acct Wilson Smith, Teacher Groups Member of: Teachers Students User Acct Sean Murphy, student Groups Member of: Students

As we share each network resource we simply designate which Groups to share the resource with.

The Windows 2000 Server contains an “Active Directory,” which is a database of all the users on the network and the groups to which they belong. Of course each user has a password to keep unauthorized people from using the users account. ACTIVE DIRECTORY

When a user logs onto the network the Active Directory looks up her account and the groups to which she belongs. She is now free to use the resources assigned to her groups. Active Directory

Some final comments about 2000 server Each network must have at least one Primary Domain Controller Server that holds the Active Directory. You may set-up backup Domain Servers and other servers as needed. Your school district may elect to place the PDC at the district office or it may be placed at your school site. The servers can be located at any physical location as long as they are connected to the network. Remember, a server can be any computer that has the resources (memory, speed, storage) to run the server software.

When you set up your network for the final project you must plan for at least one Primary Domain Controller. You should also plan for other servers, such as mail servers, CD Servers, severs for the students to store their work, Internet Information Servers for storing Intranet Files, etc. This is where your skill as an education planner and your creativity come into play. Good luck!
