1 Welcome, Poets! - Have you turned in your poem inspired by “Cody”? - Have you turned in your short story? - Have you given your presentation? - Have you taken the short story unit post-assessment? What are we doing today? - 1 st : Today’s Student Poetry Presentation - 2 nd : What is a catalog poem? - 3 rd : Using imagery to write our own catalog poems

2 What is a catalog poem? Naomi Shihab Nye’s “Daily”—Pg 495 ◦ “A catalog poem is built on a list of images. The repetition of items in the list creates a rolling rhythm when the poem is read aloud.”—Pg 494

3 Writing our own catalog poems: 1. Make a graphic organizer for all five senses related to things that make you happy. 1.At least 3 things for each sense 2. Select at least eight that you want to include in your poem 1.At least one from each sense 3. Write each selected thing as specifically as possible 1.Example: Not just “coffee” but a “grande, iced, sugar- free, vanilla latte with soy milk from Starbucks” 4. Now organize them into a poem! 1.Look back at Nye’s “Daily” for ideas—Pg 495
