2 Preliminaries  Work in pairs to write short descriptions of the school classroom. Imagine that you just landed your dream job and are excited. How would you decorate and arrange this room in that case?

3 Objectives:  The students will be able to connect imagery and feelings in poetry.  The students will be able to identify imagery and figurative language in poetry.  Students will be able to use figurative language.

4 Focus Lesson: Imagery…  Literary Terms  Imagery  Figurative Language  Simile  Metaphor  Poetry Readings  “Moons” (Elements… p. 456)  “Grape Sherbert” (Elements… p. 468)  “Three Japanese Tankas” (Elements… p. 490)  Small Groups: choose 1 poem and identify all aspects of imagery in the poem.

5 Focus Lesson: Homework  By 12/19, complete the “Try a Tanka” exercise in Elements… p. 492 using a theme (love of a person, thing, etc.)
