4. Adolescence is a transitional period from childhood and adulthood generally confined to western culture.

5. Adolescence is a time of great possibility but it can also be a period of great confusion and anxiety. There's pressure to fit in socially, to perform academically, and to act responsibly. There's the awakening of sexual feelings, a growing self-identity, and a need for autonomy that often conflicts with the rules and expectations set by others.

6. It's totally normal for teens to create their own opinions, thoughts, and values about life; it's what prepares them for adulthood.

Case studies of the shooting at Columbine High School and other U.S. schools have suggested that bullying was a factor in many of the incidents. 1 out of 4 kids is Bullied 43% fear harassment in the bathroom at school.

14. 8,000,000 or more people in the United States have an eating disorder. 90% are women. Victims may be rich or poor. Eating disorders usually start in the teens but may begin as early as age 8

15. Physical fighting among adolescents is of public health concern both because of the potential for fight-related injuries and its association with participation in many other health risk behaviors.

Nationally, more than half of teenagers are virgins until they are at least 17 years of age In the U.S., 1 in 4 sexually active teens become infected with an STD every year. 60.2 percent of sexually inactive girls report that they “rarely or never” feel depressed.
