4 Parachute Lab Over the next few class periods, we will be using our knowledge and skills from this unit about scientific inquiry to perform a lab. Let’s read from our lab instructions sheet to find out what we’re doing for the lab!

5 Parachute Lab GOAL: To design and build a parachute that serves a specific purpose (staying in the air the longest). ROLE: Parachute design team for Performance Designs AUDIENCE: CEO and Board Members of Performance Designs SITUATION: As members of the parachute design team for the company Performance Designs, your boss has asked your team to develop a brand new parachute to market to customers. Your parachute must serve a purpose – to stay in the air the longest. PRODUCT: Design and carry out a scientifically based experiment to test and determine the best parachute that carries out the specific performance. STANDARDS and CRITERIA: See the Rubric below

8 Parachute Lab You won’t be completing this entire lab in one day, we will be working over the course of a few class periods to complete this entire lab. Today you will work on the following:  Writing a scientific question  Using background knowledge  Forming a hypothesis  Identifying variables  Writing materials  Writing a procedure

9 Parachute Lab You will work with your table groups to design the lab that you will perform next class period. You might not have enough time to write everything down with your group but you will have time to write down parts of your discussion and complete your thoughts during the independent practice.
