1.Enter the classroom silently and find your seat. 2.Take out your HAWK card, agenda, syllabus, and pencils 3.Put backpack by the back wall 4.Write down homework in your agenda – Return signed safety contract and lab safety quiz next class {45 sec} 5.Stack planners at the front of your table group 6.Stack signed syllabus on top of the planners 7.Write the objectives and learner profile 8.Do Now {5 min} 9.Wait silently for instructions 7 min AGENDA DO NOW: Answer the two questions on your guided notes. Objective(s): SWBAT generate examples of appropriate lab equipment use and describe safe lab rules for specific situations. SWBAT decide the best use for items after they are used in a lab: recycle, reuse, or dispose. Wednesday, August 12 Learner Profile - Principled

Statement of Inquiry/IB Trait STATEMENT OF INQUIRY: Humans explore the relationships among interacting variables and use evidence to impact communities and find functional solutions using scientific and technological advances. IB TRAIT: PRINCIPLED

Chuck Norris Facts I’m going to give you a series of facts about Chuck Norris and lab safety. You’re going to guess what is wrong with each statement.

Chuck Norris Facts chemical shower him Chuck Norris doesn’t need a chemical shower in the lab because chemicals are afraid of him.

Chuck Norris Facts apron protection An apron wears Chuck Norris for protection in the lab.

Chuck Norris Facts fire extinguisher Chuck Norris doesn’t need a fire extinguisher to put out a fire in the lab, he uses himself.

Why Lab Safety? Performing labs are a fun and exciting way for us to learn. But, we may work in classrooms that contain many potentially hazardous materials that aren’t found in other parts of the school. We are responsible for our own safety, as well as our classmates, teacher, visitors, the custodian, and anyone else who might enter this room.

Lab Rules 1.Never work in the lab unless an adult is present 2.Follow all instructions given by the teacher 3.Wear proper eye protection 4.Clean up spills appropriately 5.Wear proper clothing: long hair tied back, no open toe shoes, no dangling jewelry 6.No food or drink in the lab 7.Consider every chemical dangerous 8.No horseplay or practical jokes 9.Discard of waste properly as instructed by teacher 10.Know how and when to use safety equipment 11. If something breaks, notify the teacher immediately 12.Never point a test tube toward yourself or anyone else

Turn and Talk What rules do you think are most important? Why?

Lab Equipment protect This clothing is all worn to protect your body from potential hazards. Gloves Goggles Apron

Lab Equipment hazardous chemicals These items are used to wash away hazardous chemicals from your body. Eyewash Station Chemical Shower

Lab Equipment fires These items are used to put out fires. Fire Blanket Fire Extinguisher

Waste Disposal After labs, there may be some materials, or waste, left over. The type of waste that is left over will determine how we need to dispose of it. – Non-hazardous waste is not harmful to us but still need to be disposed of properly Paper, paper towels, sand, soil, pieces of wood, etc.

Waste Disposal There are three ways we will dispose of waste –Reuse –Reuse : the material is in good condition and is not hazardous –Recycle –Recycle : the material cannot be reused or is in poor condition, only steel, aluminum, paper, glass, and some plastics –Dispose –Dispose : The item cannot be reused or recycled. Proper disposal is necessary. Not all items may be placed in the trash. Ask the teacher if you are unsure of how to dispose of something.

Hazardous Waste ismust Hazardous waste is harmful to us and must be disposed of properly Dispose of hazardous waste in an approved, labeled container given to you by the teacher. People trained in waste disposal will then take care of safely disposing of the waste.

Hazardous Waste Flammable waste – Rubbing alcohol, solvents, gasoline, etc. Corrosive chemical waste – Acids, bases, discarded wet-cell batteries Toxic waste – Poisonous chemicals, some cleaning products, etc. Biological/Medical – Dead animals, mold, used petri dishes, etc. Sharp objects and glassware – Broken glass, objects with blades or points Radioactive waste – Used x-ray equipment, laboratory contaminated with radiation

Guided Practice I will present to you a series of potential situations that could happen in the lab. You will turn and talk to your elbow partner about what you would do in this situation based on the lab rules, the lab equipment, and waste disposal material you learned. After two minutes, we will talk as a class about what we would do in this situation.

What would you do? A beaker falls onto the floor during an experiment and breaks. The scholar decides to pick up the pieces and throw them away by themselves. 2 min

Scholars are working with chemicals in the lab. A scholar decides to take off their safety goggles and some of the chemical splashes onto their face. What would you do? 2 min

The teacher walks into the lab room and finds scholars working unsupervised and going through lab supplies. What would you do? 2 min

It is lab day in the 6 th grade Science classroom and some students are wearing baggy clothes, open toed shoes, and loose hair. What would you do? 2 min

Independent Practice Create a safety poster to hang in the classroom. Your poster must represent the safety rules and procedures as well as lab safety equipment. You draw, write a story, illustrate steps, etc. If there is time, you may color your poster! 20 min

Complete the exit ticket silently and stack at your table group when you are finished. Exit Ticket 5 min

STOP Cards SSummarize: Summarize the day’s lesson and what we learned. TTrait: What IB trait relates to the lesson? OObjective: Re-state in your own words and say whether or not we met that objective for the day. PPurpose: What was the purpose of this lesson?

Exit Procedure 1.Voice level 0 - Silence 2.Get your backpack and pack up all of your things. 3.Stand up and push in chair 4.Ladies line up 5.Gentlemen line up 6.Exit silently 7.Hallways are a Level 2 (indoor voice)
