Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility LBNF LBNF/DUNE Logistics Workshop Summary Mike Headley August 19, 2015

LBNF Overview Many, major activities occurring at SURF over next ~15 years  Operations and decommissioning of LUX  Assembly, operations, and decommissioning of MJD  Installation and operations of CASPAR  Installation and operations of the BHSU UG Campus and LBCs  Completion of Ross Shaft refurbishment and continued SURF Ops  Construction, installation, and start of ops for LBNF/DUNE  Installation and operations of LZ LBNF / DUNE to commence construction soon (Elaine to cover)  Currently in preliminary design, CD-3A planned for Dec 2015  2017 - Installation of waste rock handling systems  Late 2017 - Excavation mobilization then outfitting and cryo install  mid-2020s – Commissioning and science operations begin 08.19.15Mike Headley | Logistics Workshop Summary2

LBNF Logistics Plan Scope 08.19.15Mike Headley | Logistics Workshop Summary3 Arup developing comprehensive logistics plan out to ~2030  Construction and installation plans including utilization of SURF and surrounding infrastructure, number and timing of deliveries, hours of required operation, parking, and warehouse and lay down space needs.  Plans for waste storage and removal from SURF.  Traffic management including loading, unloading, parking, planned access routes, capacity and utilization for transportation of materials, supplies, equipment, and staff.  Recommendations on facility infrastructure modifications or process changes to improve the efficiency of all activities.  Summary of risks specifically related to logistics plans.  Projection of personnel involved onsite throughout construction and installation and recommendations on staff support including housing  Site security and safety considerations.

LBNF Logistics Plan development schedule 08.19.15Mike Headley | Logistics Workshop Summary4 Logistics WorkshopAugust 11-13 Draft Comprehensive Logistics Report DueSeptember 10 Stakeholder Feedback DueSeptember 25 Final Comprehensive Logistics Report DueOctober 9

LBNF Topics covered 08.19.15Mike Headley | Logistics Workshop Summary5 Infrastructure overview Surface and underground tours Presentations by SURF operations, LUX/LZ, Majorana, CASPAR, BHSU Underground Campus (low background counting) LBNF/DUNE presentations by CF, cryostat, cryogenic systems, FD Risk identification / analysis of items related to logistics Arup led discussion of the topics outlined in the logistics scope Presentation of information captured in excel-based toolset to track SURF infrastructure usage over time

LBNF Key items reviewed in evaluating infrastructure usage 08.19.15Mike Headley | Logistics Workshop Summary6 Each group provided a detailed presentation on schedule and infrastructure needs and a resource usage spreadsheet Key constraints  Shaft access  Big X  Governor’s Corner Shaft options for LBNF+DUNE  Ross only  Ross + Yates “as-is”  Ross + Yates “upgraded” (assume not feasible for now) We looked at Ross Shaft for ALL work on LBNF+DUNE only

LBNF Planning outputs - Assumes Ross Shaft only for LBNF/DUNE (draft) 08.19.15Mike Headley | Logistics Workshop Summary7

LBNF Draft schedule and Ross Shaft utilization (Excavation, BSI, and Cryostat phasing needs to be addressed) 08.19.15Mike Headley | Logistics Workshop Summary8

LBNF Top 15 risks identified – pre-mitigation scoring 08.19.15Mike Headley | Logistics Workshop Summary9

LBNF Mitigations to be considered 08.19.15Mike Headley | Logistics Workshop Summary10 Install concrete slick line borehole from surface to 4850L to remove concrete/shotcrete transport from the Ross Shaft Install boreholes for nitrogen and argon gas delivery to 4850L Assuming LBNF/DUNE utilize Ross Shaft for transport of long loads (up to 17m), modify Ross Headframe accordingly and/or evaluate shortening of cryostat steel beams to ease installation Utilize Yates Shaft as is – do not modify for long loads and avoid impacts to Davis Campus experiments Plan and conduct controlled blasting test program to evaluate impacts for LBNF excavation on other 4850L inhabitants Evaluate acceleration of phase 1 excavation to speed cryostat 1 installation and thus FD installation. Adjust EXC, BSI, and cryostat schedules to fix phasing of CF to cryostat installation
