10 ‘14 “Connecting … through Culture” A vision for global citizenship June 04 th -06 th Abbey Neumünster Luxembourg The focus of this conference is to examine the critical role of culture for developing students who think broadly, who recognize and respect cultural diversity and heritage, and whose engagement in the arts serves as a conduit to personal authenticity and innovation.

11 The goal of the conference is to dig deeply into key questions that help assess the value of embedding culture into higher education curricula. The three overarching questions for this transatlantic dialogue are: Why does culture matter? How can culture prepare to become globally literate and responsible citizens? How can culture be institutionalized in the academy?

12 Each of the questions will be answered by considering the implications for policy, practice, and pedagogy. Each of these areas must work cooperatively to assure that culture and development of culturally competent students are important aspects of the educational experience.

13 Learning Outcomes: The desired outcomes of the conference are that as a result of the transatlantic dialogue participants can articulate why culture matters in their own societal and institutional context demonstrate a philosophy of practice that develops students’ capacity for cultural competence advocate for the value of culture as a critical component of a university education - in the formal curriculum and in the co-curriculum
