Distinguish between performance problems that require coaching and those that don’t. Understand the importance of observation and analysis before coaching a team member. Productivity will likely increase because of improved relations (for both you and your team members). It may reduce the amount of stress in your work environment because of improved relations between you and team members. This doesn’t assume that relations between you and your team members are poor; only that it is important to continuously improve wherever possible.

11 Copyright © Vital Learning Corporation Things to Keep in Mind when Coaching CJS-11 Create a non threatening environment. Let the team member know why the task must be done in a certain way. Encourage the team member to ask questions as you go along. Repeat steps if needed to insure understanding. Create a positive atmosphere by encouraging the learner frequently.

After the team member has demonstrated the task, probe for further questions and provide advice about where to go for help if needed. As the team member’s competence grows, review less frequently but continue to reinforce his/her progress. Performance problems usually require more than one coaching session for satisfactory solution. Coaching session should occur in relative privacy. CJS-12

People learn by seeing and doing something over again (practice) until they have mastered the skill. Adults learn best when the need to know is there. A new skill or concept is best learned if the team member can associate or relate it to something he/she already knows. People learn at different rates.
