3 SOL Standards History/ Social Studies 3.2 Describe the oral tradition, government and economic development of the early West African empire of Mali. Art 3.3 TSW develop art ideas from alternative sources, including print, non-print, and technology Art 3.13 TSW discuss how history, culture, and the visual arts influence each other. Art 3.17 TSW explain the role of archaeology in learning about the art of past cultures.

4 Content Objectives TSW study the early West African empire of Mali through its oral tradition (storytelling), government(kings), and economic development (trade). TSW discuss how history, culture, and the visual arts are related.

5 Lesson 1 Sol Objective: Art 3.13 TSW discuss how history, culture, and the visual arts influence each other. Lesson 1 Without Technology: Show students pictures and books about the people of ancient Mali. Students discuss in groups the answers to questions on chart. Lesson 1 Technology-Infused: Students work with a partner in the computer lab locating website information and answering questions on template.

Lesson 2 Without Technology: Look at visuals and pictures, teacher lectures on materials students answer questions. Lesson 2 Technology-Infused: Students go to website to view artifacts from ancient Mali and answer questions, http://www.nmfa.edu/mali/works

9 Lesson 3-African Folktale Sol Objective: Art 2.2 TSW use literary sources to generate ideas for works of art. Lesson 3 Without Technology: Students would listen to African folktale Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears by Verna Aardema and draw a picture with chalk on paper Lesson 3 Technology-Infused:Students listen to story and use Claris Works drawing program to illustrate their favorite part of the story.

10 Lesson 3: Student Sample Student will pick a their favorite part of the story, write a sentence, and illustrate it.

11 Lesson 4 Sol Objective: Art 3.3 TSW develop art ideas from alternative sources, including print, non-print, and technology. Lesson 4 Without Technology: Students use precut sponges pressed into paint and printed on paper to make a pattern. Lesson 4 Technology-Infused: Students use computers to repeat shapes and make a pattern quilt. Method of Single Computer Use: Students work individually on pattern quilt on classroom computer.

Lesson 5 Without Technology:Teacher would create a chart by hand for students to fill in. Lesson 5 Technology-Infused:Teacher can create a chart that can be altered and reused. Students fill in chart. Extra Credit
