TSW write a five sentence paragraph about something they did over the weekend or a significant event. TSW include various types of verbs and sentence variety. When the students are finished they will underline the line they think best describes the main idea of their paragraph.

ELACC3R16- Distinguish their own point of view from that of the author of the text. ELACC3W1- Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons.

How can I convey and support my point of view through an opinion writing piece? How do I distinguish my point of view through text?

Hook: TSW view a PowerPoint presentation on point of view. TSW write the two essential questions in their interactive notebook and refer back to them throughout the lesson.

Divide the class into two groups. Explain that they are going to be reading a short piece of text and their task is to remember as many details as possible from the text.

Tell one half the class that they burglars and the other half of the class that they are real estate agents, without divulging the roles to the opposite groups.

Read aloud “The House” to your students. While your are reading, students should not be taking notes. Once the reading is complete, ask students to list as many details as they can remember about the house. Students then share their lists within their group.

Distribute chart paper to each group so students can record. Hang both list and discuss the similarities and differences between the two and discuss whether the lists would be different from another viewpoint.

Read aloud two different versions of “The Three Little Pigs.” Model a compare/contrast of the versions using a Venn Diagram. Read aloud “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs.”

Discuss similarities and differences between this text and a more traditional version. Students should recognize the purpose of the lesson; the focus being that there are not only different versions of a story, but different viewpoints to consider when reading a story.

Students are to select one fairy tale and rewrite the tale from the viewpoint of a different character or object within the tale. Students can use books selected from the library or online resources to help make their selection.

Answer the following questions in your interactive notebook based on the fairy tale they chose: How does the way the text is written help shape your interpretation? How does this text lead itself to alternative interpretations?
