Warm-Up Update your Table of Contents Pick your Plague Inc. Warning up off the front counter if you want it! Write your homework – Get it stamped! – Project Outbreak – due in 2 classes! – Test on Sessions 1-7 – next class! Read the article about Global Viral Forecasting and answer the questions! DateSession # ActivityPage # 3/19 & 3/20 7 Global Viral Forecasting & Analyzing Disease Outbreak Data 14 Pathogen Scavenger Scan 15

Global Viral Forecasting Read the article & answer the following questions 1.Who is the doctor that started the Global Viral Forecasting (GVF) Initiative? 2.What is the goal of GVF? 3.What regions of the world does GVF focus on? 4.GVF is mostly concerned with the transmission of viruses to humans through which means? 5.Who does GVF target in these areas of the world to help them gain valuable information? 6.Why does the risk of a new virus emerging continue to increase in these areas of the world? Article Source: http://lightbox.time.com/2011/10/28/virus-hunter-how-one-scientist-is-preventing-the-next-pandemic/#1Atr

Pathogen Scavenger Scan Number 1-20 on page 15 of your notebook – skip lines between 17 – 20 only You only need to write the answers to the questions after you scan them. Use your notes to help you!

QR 1 4 types of pathogens

QR 2 What is a pathogen?

QR 3 Which pathogen: prefer moist environments; cause respiratory problems

QR 4 Which pathogen: not living; vaccines to treat

QR 5 Which pathogen: unicellular; antibiotics to treat

QR 6 Which pathogen: living; needs a host

QR 7 Scientist who studies disease

QR 8 Pathogens that are contagious

QR 9 Pathogens that change your cells

QR 10 Infected person

QR 11 Appears sick vs. doesn’t appear sick

QR 12 Infected animal

QR 13 Preferred environments of pathogens

QR 14 How do pathogens spread through food and water?

QR 15 Example: Cholera in London

QR 16 Example: Influenza of 1918

QR 17 How do bacteria reproduce?

QR 18 Factors for the risk of spreading a disease

QR 19 Factors for the ability to contain a disease

QR 20 Factors that increase the risk of a new disease emerging

Analyzing Graphs Flip your Warm-Up over and analyze the graphs/charts!

Study Slides For this test, you should be able to… Name all 4 types of pathogens & be familiar with: – Their characteristics, spread, treatment & prevention – Can you compare & contrast them? Know some examples of diseases each type of pathogen causes… Know the difference between communicable vs. non-communicable diseases..

Study Slides You should be able to describe the job of an epidemiologist… What is the difference between a contagion and a mutagen…? You should know the 4 common ways that pathogens spread, and details of each… You should know the preferred environments of pathogens… What is the difference between a carrier and a vector…?

Study Slides What is the difference between a symptomatic and asymptomatic patient…? You should be able to calculate how quickly bacteria replicate… What is the difference between an epidemic and a pandemic…? Can you give specific examples of epidemics and pandemics…?

Study Slides From the Map Analysis Activity… What are some factors that increase the risk of a disease spreading…? What are some factors that make a country able or not able to contain a disease once it breaks out…? What are some factors that make a country more or less likely for a new disease to emerge from that country…? You should also be able to analyze graphs or charts with disease data!

Study Slides How can a virus change the world? Re-watch the videos… http://www.takepart.com/sites/default/files/co ntagion/index.html#&slider1=1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UG8YbNbda co What is Global Viral Forecasting…? How can Global Viral Forecasting change the world…?

Project Outbreak Work on your project for the rest of class… DON’T FORGET: – Your project must focus on a SPECIFIC outbreak, from a SPECIFIC point in time and in a SPECIFIC location…this is not a general informational presentation. – You must share your presentation with me! Don’t tell me you thought your partner was going to share it!

Warm-Up Update your Table of Contents for today Write a reminder for Project Outbreak – have it stamped! Review your notes for the test…what questions do you have? DateSession # ActivityPage # 3/23 & 3/24 8 Pathogen Unit Test Day (Nothing to tape in today) XXXX

INFECTED! (same as BOOM) HOW TO PLAY: Janay and Creston are partners. Take all of the cards out of the bag and put them in a pile upside down. Janay picks a card (without looking at it) and slides it to Creston. He asks her the question. If she gets the question right, she keeps the card. If she gets the question wrong, the card goes back in the pile. If Janay picks a INFECTED card, ALL of her cards go back in the pile, including the INFECTED cards! Janay answers questions until she gets one wrong, or picks an INFECTED card then it is Creston’s turn to pick a card and answer a question. The person with the most cards wins!

Test Time You will need a pencil and a calculator, clear everything else off your desk, and put your folders up! When you are done, put your test in the basket! Complete any make up work – if you need a progress report, ask for one…the end of the quarter is next Tuesday! Work on Project Outbreak – it must be submitted by next class! (Share NOW to avoid “forgetting” to share!)
