2 What is the University of London? Federation of 19 self-governing ‘colleges’ paying subscription, as members of the UL, to maintain central services that support desired levels of unity and co-operation among members, and achieve economies of scale Management / regulation of all academic functions via Collegiate Council, itself overseen by Board of Trustees (9 independents, including Chair; 4 heads of colleges, VC)

3 At the Federation’s centre Central administration Cross-collegiate academic functions (External System; SAS; research libraries) SAS as University of London research hub for humanities/social sciences, answerable to Collegiate Council but represented on it

4 What is SAS? Ten separate research institutes representing individual disciplines and interdisciplinary subject areas, with a central administration: Advanced Legal Studies, Americas, Classical Studies, Commonwealth, English Studies, Germanic & Romance Studies, Historical Research, Musical Research, Philosophy, Warburg Centre for advanced study embracing libraries and library services, fellowship programmes, postgraduate programmes, academic events, research training, research projects, consultancy. UL federation within a UL federation?

5 But… Major public funding for SAS does not currently come from colleges or University HEFCE Special Funding terms Institute Directors can be seconded from any HEI nationwide National Research Promotion and Facilitation mandate in Crewe 2007

6 Implications Serving a combination of needs: both University of London and beyond Creating, supporting, maintaining national infrastructures Providing national information gateways Acting as co-ordinator for national initiatives
