7 Asking Directions Excuse me/pardon me,… Where is (the police station)? Could you direct me to (the train station)? How do I get to (the embassy)? Could you tell me the way to (the park)? Which is the quickest way to (the Post Office)? What’s the best way to (the supermarket)? What (number) bus do I take to (the city government)?

8 Asking Directions (cont.) If you are in a car: What’s the easiest way to (the North Ring Road)? Is there parking (at Wan Da Shopping Centre)? Asking about distances: How far is it? How long will it take (on foot/by car/by bus/by plane/by camel)? Can I get there in (ten minutes)?

9 Practice: Asking Directions In groups of 2 or 3 people, use the following information to practice asking directions and distances: (a) West Lake Park, bike (b) Provincial Hospital, car (c) Walmart ( 沃尔玛 ), bus (d) Zhong Zhou Church, walking

10 Giving Directions To tell people the way: It’s near the (church) It’s across from/behind/next to (the supermarket) Go straight/straight ahead Turn left/right at the (first/second) street/traffic light Go towards (the park) and turn left Cross/go across the road Go over/under the bridge Go along the street Go past the (Post Office)

11 Giving Directions (cont.) To identify the place: It’s the (first) street It’s the (first) on the left/right It’s on the left/right hand side of the road To tell people distances: It’s quite far/close It’s too far to walk. You should take the bus/a taxi. It’s not very far/it’s quite near here It’s about (two) kilometers It’s (ten minutes) on foot/walking/by car It’s (an hour’s/five minute’s) walk/drive It should take you (35 minutes/an hour)

12 Practice: Giving Directions In groups of 2 or 3 people, use the following information to give directions and distances: (a) West Lake Park, bike, 45 minutes (b) Provincial Hospital, car, Wuyi Road, Dong Street (c) Walmart ( 沃尔玛 ), #83 bus, 6 stops, 20 minutes (d) Zhong Zhou Church, walking, along the river, Jiefang Bridge

13 Practice: Asking and Giving Directions In groups of 2 or 3 people, use the map provided and the following information to give directions and distances: (a)Yonge Street and Bloor Street to Little Italy, 20 minutes walking (b) Eglinton Avenue West and Bathurst Avenue to Little India, 20 minutes driving

14 (c) Chinatown (on Spadina Avenue) to Caribbean stores, 15 minutes driving (d) Greek Town to Korea Town, 15 minutes by subway (along Bloor Street and Danforth Avenue)

15 Homework Make lists of words to describe your hometown: Write words (adjectives) which describe the downtown or countryside, the houses or buildings, the restaurants or hotels, the roads, the people, the weather, the transportation, and the food.
