Identify forms of energy that are related to changes in matter.

Does this ball have energy? Where did it come from?

Science Standard 8.5.c: Students know chemical reactions usually liberate heat or absorb heat.

energy: ability to do work or cause change. temperature: measure of the average energy of random motion of particles of matter. thermal energy: the total energy of all the particles in an object. endothermic change: change in which energy is taken in (melting of ice). exothermic change: releases energy (warming hands by the fire).

chemical energy: energy stored in the chemical bonds between atoms. electromagnetic energy: a form of energy that travels through space as waves. electrical energy: energy of electrically charged particles moving from one place to another. electrode: metal strip that conducts electricity.

 Forms of Energy  Thermal Energy  Chemical Energy  Electromagnetic Energy  Electrical Energy  Transforming Energy  *

A student observes two different chemical reactions, one in beaker A, and the other in beaker B. The student measures the temperature of each reaction every minute. The student then plots the time and temperature data and creates the following graph.

The experiment lasted for 10 minutes. Reading Graphs: What do the numbers on the x-axis tell you about the length of the experiment?

The temperature decreased in beaker B, but increased in beaker A. Comparing and Contrasting: How did the change in temperature in beaker B differ from that in beaker A?

Reaction A is exothermic because thermal energy was released, causing an increase in temperature. Interpreting Data: Which reaction is exothermic? Explain your reasoning.

Reaction A Calculating: Which reaction results in a greater change in temperature over time?

What is the ability to do work or cause change? energy Thermal, Chemical, _______ & Electromagnetic are the forms of energy. Electrical

Answer #1, 3, 6, 7 Finish the worksheet.

HOMEWORK EXTENSION  Write a detailed SUMMARY of the section and complete the UNANSWERED QUESTIONS section of your notes.  Choose two of the remaining Depth & Complexity ICONS in your notes and explain how they relate to this section.
