Comm Arts-Day 3 Bell Ringer: Find the run-ons and fragments and fix them. Write your corrections on a separate sheet of paper. There are 3 run-ons and 1 fragment. (4 mins) This weekend I saw my sister, it was the best weekend I’ve had in a long time. We ate at Bella Italia on Friday. Hot, cheesy pizza! It was perfect for a cold Friday. After we ate pizza, we went home. Our dog was waiting for us, we fed her green beans. We also watched Wreck-It Ralph, it is one of my favorite movies. The next day we picked pumpkin and ate kettle corn. She left on Sunday at 5:30AM! It was a fast visit, but I loved every minute.

Lesson Goal and Essential Question Lesson Goals: Essential Questions: Students will know that a claim/main idea should be supported with relevant evidence. Students will be able to support an opinion with facts. What makes a piece of writing effective? How do I support my opinion?

Class Practice-Claim with Facts (8 mins) Before we get back into the article we read yesterday, let’s take a break and see how we can: 1. Make a claim 2. Support it 3. Explain the support (Show vs. Tell) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9haZDohtYbc We will watch a video about Ben Carson, a Pediatric Neurosurgeon. After we watch the video, we will create a claim as a class, pull facts from the video, and explain them.

Interesting Words (2 mins) Review your t-chart. Make sure you have defined all of the words on your t-chart. Do you still have questions?

Practice Claim !-12 mins First, log on to edmodo and click on the “Guns in Schools?” article to begin your practice. Once you have entered the document, you will see these directions: Step 1 - Read this article Step 2- Choose a claim from below to support Step 3- Reread the article Step 4- Fill in the graphic organizer given to you with three facts to support the claim. Step 5- Check each fact to make sure it is… 1.) a fact (can be proven or observed) 2.) is specific (it is the same for everyone) 3) it supports the claim. Step 6- Think about how you would debate this. How would you explain your facts? What might the other side (opposition) say? How could you prove them wrong. Step 7- Prepare to debate.
