2 Origins of Basketball Basketball is one of the most popular world sports, next to of course soccer, it has become especially popular in North America. 3 The NBA and ABA The ABA (American Basketball Association) was created in 1967 but quickly, most of the league folded in 1976, but some teams merged to the NBA. The NBA was founded in 1946 and grew popular quickly. In the 1970s, with the ABA growing more popular, the NBA decided to merge as to gain more popularity.
