ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM How to Use Infozoom ICS 105 Research Team Winter 2002

What is InfoZoom ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM InfoZoom allows us to have a visual perception of a large set of data that cannot easily be viewed in a tabulated setting. Uses of Infozoom: Explore Data Analyze Data Search Data

Initial Screen ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM

Initial Screen After Loading Data ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM

Attributes and Objects ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM

Attributes and Objects Attributes –Weight, height, speed, eye color, age, etc… Objects –People, Animals, etc… ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM

Attributes for Dating Data Set Here are a list of the attributes used in this data set. 8 Presentation Styles Wide View –Individual data Compressed View –All data Overview –Category ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM

Wide View ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM

Compressed View ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM

Overview ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM

Functionality There are 4 functions with each presentation style –Zooming in –Zooming out –Sorting –Graphing ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM

Zooming In Zooming in focuses on a specific aspect of the database in relation to the rest of the database. You first select a data and click “Zoom In” and the database will narrow down to all data containing your selection. Screenshot in Overview ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM

Zooming Out Zooming out takes you back to extracting the selected category to view all values of that category. Screenshot in Overview ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM

Sorting Sorting is done by click on the arrow( ) next to the attribute name. It will sort the data from A – Z or in numeric order. By clicking on it again, it will sort in reverse order. Screenshot in Compressed View ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM

Graphing Graphing allows you to have a graphical view of a certain attribute. You can do this by clicking on a certain attribute name and clicking on the “Chart” icon. Different graphing methods are available. Screenshot in Wide View ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM

Changing Attribute Positions Click on an attribute Hold and drag up or down This can help with comparing certain attributes side by side. Usually helpful in compressed view. ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM

Single Derived Attribute A single derived attribute allows you to form a definite value for a certain attribute. For instance, this function can help getting the average weight of all the objects in our database. ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM

Derived Attribute of 2 Attributes Deriving an attribute with 2 attributes allows us to get a derived value in relation to a certain attribute. For instance, the average weight for each hair color can be found. It is also important that you place these attributes side by side, such as weight on top and hair color on bottom and have both these selected. ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM

Compressed View Details Most discoveries regarding direct correlation of attributes can be found in the Compressed View mode. This is done by sorting(functionality mentioned before) and comparing these attributes to other attributes. ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM

Example This is done by sorting Income and then seeing the relation of income with Spending. This shows that people with a higher income tend to spend more. ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM

Sorting Two Attributes(Hierarchical Sorting) By sorting attributes we can see two attributes in relation to each other. This one shows “Gender” per “Income” and done by selecting Income first then Gender. From this we can see that the steeper slope in “Income” under “Male” indicates males having a generally higher income. ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM

Making Lines Wider You can also increase the height of the attribute displayed. This may help in comparing certain attributes. ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM

Attributes for Population Survey Attributes for population survey ICS 105 Research Team INFOZOOM Person IDYears Education Live in South?Gender Years work experienceUnion member? Hourly wageAge RaceOccupation SectorMarried?
