QUESTION: WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A HELPING VERB?

PERFECT TENSES AND PROGRESSIVE FORMS

DAY 2 Present perfect – occurred at a time in the past: I have waited.
Present progressive - happening now: I am waiting. Past perfect – occurred before another past event: I had waited. Past progressive – took place as another action occurred: I was waiting. Future perfect- will start and finish in the future: I will have waited. Future progressive – will occur while another happens: I will be waiting. DAY 2

Mechanics and Usage: Avoiding Verb Tense Shifts

Avoid shifting from one verb tense to another in the same sentence when the action occurs at the same time. Ex. Whenever I cooked, my sister asks for more. The acts of cooking and asking occur at the same time, so the tenses must match. Ex. Whenever I cook, my sister asks for more. When actions occur at different times, however, a shift makes sense. Ex. I usually walk to school, but yesterday I rode my bike. DAY 3
