4 B Angel Island B

5 Angel Island For thirty years, from 1910 to 1940, Angel Island in San Francisco Bay was the first, often the only, toehold (落脚点) in America for immigrants from China. During the time they spent on the island, as little as a few days, as long as three years, they carved and ink brushed their thoughts onto the walls. One hundred thirty-five calligraphic (书法的) poems survived, first discovered after Angel Island was abandoned( 遗弃 ) in 1940. These tell of voyages (航行) from China, stay (停留) on the island, attitudes towards the first Americans immigration officials and social workers -- and finally their disappointments.
