Golden Gate Bridge San Francisco, California Avery Goodstudent and Al Waysworks

Why is it important? Why is it considered a wonder of the world?  When it was built, it was the longest bridge in the world.  It is still the 9 th longest bridge in the world.

Location and Geographical Information  Located in San Francisco, California  The “Golden Gate” is the name of the area where the Pacific Ocean meets the San Francisco Bay.

Building the Bridge  After the Gold Rush, San Francisco grew rapidly and they need a bridge across the bay to reduce traffic congestion  Designed by Joseph Strauss  Construction started in 1933 (during the Great Depression), and the bridge opened in 1937  No record of how many workers it took to build the bridge

Other Facts about the Golden Gate Bridge  11 construction workers died building the bridge  Built from over 80, 000 tons of steel  Has been part of many movies including the original Superman (1978) and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)

My Wonder Today  Over 40 million cars cross the bridge each year  Bridge is about 1.7 miles long and 90 ft. wide  Must pay a $6 toll to drive a car across the bridge  Visitors may walk or ride bikes across the bridge.

Visint the Golden Gate Bridge  We would love to visit the Golden Gate Bridge because we have never seen anything like it. It would be fun to walk or bike over the bridge.  We would also like to do other things in San Francisco like visiting Alcatraz island.

Why should we learn about the World Wonders?  It is good to learn about the World Wonders because they are a part of history.  When you study the World Wonders, you can learn interesting things. For example, during constriction they strung a huge net underneath the Golden Gate Bridge. The net saved the lives of 19 construction workers who fell off the brige.

Another Wonder of the World…  The Statue of Liberty should be considered a World Wonder.  It is a famous symbol of our country, and it symbolized freedom for many immigrants who came to the United States.
