Newport High School Large (1800) traditional high school Rigorous college-prep curriculum Advanced Placement program Impressive, passionate teachers Support services Strong student leadership Strong school spirit with lots of clubs / activities / sports for all interests Important to maintain balance

School Counselors – Who we are and what we do Masters degree + state certification Trained in counseling theory & clinical practice with a focus in schools School counselors differ from mental health counselors, in terms of long-term counseling for students School counselors assist students with Academic, Personal / Social and College / Career concerns Counseling program includes, but is not limited to : Classroom guidance lessons for each grade level, parent information nights, counselor participation on student support teams, collaboration with teachers, administrators and parents, individual meetings with students, professional development, and academic advising / schedule issues.

9 th Grade Main focus of Freshman Year … 1. Transition to High School Link Crew Leaders Counselor led classroom presentations in early October Teachers watch for students who need extra assistance 2. Get involved in High School community Community service – 40 hours required Leadership, Clubs, Drama Sports ( keep eligibility requirements in mind )

9 th Grade Main focus of Freshman Year ( cont.)… 3. Academic Success GPA counts for college starting now Develop time and stress management techniques Develop strong study skills 4. Independence & Self-Advocacy Skills Encourage and teach students to speak directly to teachers

10 th Grade Rigorous curriculum ( balance )/ AP choices Stay involved ( clubs, sports, etc ) Community service !! Strengthen study skills PSAT / Practice ACT Start researching and visiting colleges BSD College Conference and National College Fair

11 th Grade Continue in rigorous and balanced program PSAT – October, during school day Community service College rep visits, opportunity to ask admission questions, BSD College Conference, National College Fair Junior meeting opportunities with counselor SAT / ACT – student signs up in spring on-line Continue researching and then narrow college selection process : “Reach” “Realistic” “Confident” “Best fit” schools by the end of year Visit ! Visit ! Visit !

12 th Grade Colleges emphasize rigorous and balanced senior schedule Colleges look for strong senior year Complete all graduation requirements Post-high school planning National College Fair College applications staring in the fall Retake SAT / ACT if needed in the fall ( no more than twice ) College visits ( overnight and tours ) Celebrate Graduation !

BSD High School Overall Graduation Requirements 24 Credits (28 possible ) 17 Core credits + 3 Personalized Pathway Requirements + 4 Elective credits 3 rd credit of science and 3 rd credit of math are chosen by the student based on their High School and Beyond Plan Personal Pathway Requirement ( PPR ) - 3 courses that lead to specific post H. S. career or educational outcomes ; part of the High School and Beyond Plan 2.0 Minimum GPA 40 Hours Community Service

State Testing - Class of 2019 Must meet Smarter Balanced English Language Arts ( ELA ) standard : Taken in 11 th grade Must meet Smarter Balanced Math Standard : Taken in 11 th grade Must meet Science Standard : Biology EOC exam OR Comprehensive NGSS ( Next generation science standards ) Test - 1 st administration is Spring 2019 OSPI Website for Grad. What is Naviance ? Our web-based tool for students & parents Freshman students will begin / continue using Naviance for career & college research. We work with the middle school to continue curriculum started there. It helps students set personalized goals Explore career options Search for colleges & request transcripts / letters of rec Apply for scholarships Track admissions status
