TKM Chapters 9-10 By Braden Schroeder, Lucan, Chase Bishop, Jolie Anderson, Spencer Comingore, Alexander W. Engle, Tiffany Tolone, Trey Meyer, Clayton Hallsen

Chapter 9 Summary Chapter 9 begins with a boy, Cecil Jacobs, taunting Scout about Atticus defending a negro, Tom Robinson. Cecil continues to taunt Scout but she controls herself and does not fight him. The next day at school, Scout approaches Cecil and tells him to take back what he said, they almost get into another fight but Scout walks away. Then Christmas came and things got worse. Atticus, Scout, and Jem meet Uncle Jack Finch at the Maycomb Junction, he would spend a week with them. The other new characters introduced were Aunt Alexandra and Francis, Aunt Alexandra was Atticus’s sister. Uncle Jack brought along with him two long thin parcels which later were revealed to be Christmas presents from Atticus to Jem and Scout.

Chapter 9 Summary continued When it was time to open gifts the packages that Uncle Jack turned out to be air rifles for Jem and Scout. After opening those presents they had to travel to Finch’s Landing for Christmas with the family. That is where the trouble between Scout and Francis begins. Francis starts to tell Scout how Atticus has “ turned out a nigger-lover we’ll never be able to walk the streets of Maycomb agin. He’s runin’ the family, that’s what he’s doin’.” Scout finally can not hold in her anger and she punches Francis in the face. Uncle Jack sees what happens and takes Scout to the ground after she tries to run away. Scout screams at Uncle Jack “ I hate you an’ despise you an’ hope you die tomorrow!” Later on when Scout is in her room Uncle Jack comes in tries to talk to Scout. She tells him how he didn’t let her tell her side of the story. After she explains to Uncle Jack her side of the story he leaves to go talk to Atticus. Then they talk about how Atticus is going to deal with the Robinson case.

Important quotes in chapter 9 “Somehow, if I fought Cecil I would let Atticus down. Atticus so rarely asked Jem and me to do something for him, I could take being called a coward for him.” –Scout Finch, p. 81 “I was proceeding on the dim theory, aside from the innate attractiveness of such words, that if Atticus discovered I had picked them up at school he wouldn’t make me go.” –Scout Finch, p. 83 “ I know. Your daughter gave me my first lessons this afternoon. She said I didn’t understand children much and told me why. She was quite right Atticus.” –Uncle Jack Finch, p. 91

Important characters in chapter 9 Scout- tries to hold in her anger while people say bad things about Atticus defending a negro. Although she tries to hold her anger in, she ends up hitting Francis. Jem- gets an air rifle for Christmas from Atticus. Atticus- people talk badly about him because he is defending a negro. He tries to push their comments away and to move on. Meanwhile, he gets Scout and Jem air rifles for Christmas. Uncle Jack- Atticus’s brother, he comes to Maycomb every year for Christmas and stays for a week. Aunt Alexandra- Atticus’s sister, grandma of Francis Francis- son of Aunt Alexandra's son, Henry. Francis is the grandson of Aunt Alexandra.

Social and political implications in chapter 9 SocialPolitical It is obvious that people are racist in Maycomb county because of how they are saying bad things about Atticus defending a negro. Scout and her family celebrate Christmas. This shows how they are part of a religion. Scout was able to explain to Uncle Jack how he doesn’t understand children and it made sense to him. Atticus and Uncle Jack had to discuss how Atticus was not going to win the case and how Jem and Scout are going to handle it.

Chapter 10 Summary Chapter 10 starts with Scout talking to Calpurnia about how Atticus is older than other dads and how he doesn’t do anything. Later on Jem and Scout are walking down the street when they see Mr. Harry Johnson’s dog, Tim Johnson walking funny on the road. Jem and Scout go home to Calpurnia and to see if she can help the dog. When Calpurnia goes to look at the dog she realizes that it is a “mad dog.” Calpurnia calls and tells everyone that there is a mad dog on the lose and that someone needs to come help.

Chapter 10 Summary continued Atticus and Mr. Heck Tate, the sheriff of Maycomb, arrive to help. Atticus is handed a rifle and he shoots the dog. Turns out Atticus does do something, he is an excellent shot. His nickname as a kid was Ol’ One-Shot, because he was so accurate with a gun. Jem seems bothered by the fact that Atticus is such a good shot and does not want Scout to tell anyone at school.

Important quotes in chapter 10 “I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you’ll go after birds. Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” – Atticus Finch, p. 94 “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up peoples gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” – Miss Maudie, p. 94

Important characters in chapter 10 Scout and Jem - spot the “mad dog”, they go and tell Calpurnia. Calpurnia- alerts everyone of the mad dog. Miss Maudie- explains to Scout and Jem why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird she is Scout’s neighbor. Atticus- kills the mad dog, Tim Johnson. Atticus’s nickname is One- Shot. Mr. Heck Tate- Maycomb county sheriff.

Social and political implications in chapter 10 Social Political The people of Maycomb agreed to kill Tim Johnson because it was a mad dog. Jem and Scout talked to Calpurnia and Miss Maudie about how Atticus does nothing and about how he is older than other parents. They determined that the right thing to do was to kill Tim Johnson, if it was left alive it could have hurt people. Atticus had to be careful taking the shot at the dog because it was standing in front of the Radley place. He waited a second to shoot to make sure that he would not accidentally hit the house or someone inside.
