1 Lesson 11: Pure Substance or Mixture

2 Characteristic Properties An attribute that can be used to help identify a substance. A characteristic property is not affected by the amount of a substance.

3 Pure Substances A substance that is either an element or a compound.

4 Element A substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means.

5 Compound A pure substance consisting of two or more elements combined. For example sodium chloride consists of the elements sodium and chlorine.

6 Mixtures Two or more elements or compounds that are mixed together but not chemically combined.

7 Heterogeneous Mixture A mixture in which the components are not evenly mixed so that different parts of the mixture have different compositions.

8 Homogeneous Mixture A mixture in which the components are evenly mixed so that every part of the mixture is the same as any other.

9 Composite A material made from two or more substances. For example: resin and glass fibers in fiberglass.
