2. Characteristic Properties An attribute that can be used to help identify a substance. A characteristic property is not affected by the amount of a substance.

3. Pure Substances A substance that is either an element or a compound.

4. Element A substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means.

5. Compound A pure substance consisting of two or more elements combined. For example sodium chloride consists of the elements sodium and chlorine.

6. Mixtures Two or more elements or compounds that are mixed together but not chemically combined.

7. Heterogeneous Mixture A mixture in which the components are not evenly mixed so that different parts of the mixture have different compositions.

8. Homogeneous Mixture A mixture in which the components are evenly mixed so that every part of the mixture is the same as any other.

9. Composite A material made from two or more substances. For example: resin and glass fibers in fiberglass.
