2 BELLRINGER Complete Warm-Up #2 “Weather Patterns.” Be sure to use your TQRAP skills (I will be looking for them!). Read the questions CAREFULLY. Read the answers CAREFULLY. Read the selection CAREFULLY. Take your time! There is no rush. When you finish: if you were not here on the Friday before Spring Break, complete “Lesson 9: Comparing Texts.” The worksheets are on the computer table. If you were here, please read quietly.

5 OBJECTIVES FOR TODAY Block 1: During block 1 I will be doing the progress checks on your Awesome Authors Projects and reviewing your Reader Response essay over Night. While you are waiting for me to get to you, please read quietly. Block 2: We will focus on our reading skills as practice writing for the STAAR test. We will review strategies for (TEKS 8.2(A), 8.9(Fig. 19)(F), 8.10(A)(B)(D), 8.11(A)(B)(Fig. 19)(D)

6 T.Q.R.A.P. When revising and editing your own writing, or someone else’s writing, there are two acronyms to remember: A.R.M.S. & C.U.P.S.

7 A.R.M.S. FOR REVISING ARMSARMS ADD words, sentences or details REMOVE words, sentences or details MOVE words, sentences or details SUBSTITUTE dead words with specific nouns, strong verbs, vivid adjectives, informative adverbs

8 C.U.P.S. FOR EDITING CUPSCUPS Capitalization Usage Punctuation Spelling

9 EXPOSITORY ESSAY PRE-WRITING

10 1.Narrow the prompt by highlighting key terms. 2.Underline the main topic for your essay. 3. Broaden the definition of the main topic by using a graphic organizer. 4. Provide two reasons that support your example. 5. Write a truism that reflects your definition of the main topic and the example that you provided. A truism is a statement that is obviously true and provides nothing new or different.

11 HOMEWORK Complete the “Writing Modeled Instruction” revising/editing exercises worksheets. Pages 60-63. Then, look at the essay prompt on page 64 of the worksheet packet. Read the prompt and use the pre-writing skills we went over in class today to complete pre-writing exercises. You may use a separate sheet of paper or the back of page 64 for your graphic organizer. This is for a grade ! Please do not lose these sheets and please remember to bring them with you on Thursday. If you are rewriting your Holes Reader Response paper, you need to be working on those, as well. The revised papers are due on Friday, March 20.
