Laboratory for Automation Psychology and Decision Processes Laboratory for Automation Psychology (LAP) was founded in 1983 by Kent Norman and Nancy Anderson as an affiliate of the Human- Computer Interaction Laboratory (HCIL) and the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS).

6. Laboratory for Automation Psychology and Decision Processes We study the cognitive side of the human/computer interface with an emphasis on the processes of judgment and decision making. Our graduate students are generally in the Cognitive Area of Psychology and have a dual interest in cognitive processes such as judgment and decision making, learning and memory, or attention and performance and in the human/computer interface.

7. Laboratory for Automation Psychology and Decision Processes The LAPDP is housed in the Biology/Psychology Building. It occupies 600 square feet and is divided into four rooms: the library/entrance, the main control room, the testing theater, and the observation room.

8. Projects: Usability Testing This study seeks to apply additional techniques and conditions to traditional usability testing, as well as minimizing the experimenter's involvement in the procedure. Dual-monitor exploration. The test materials will be presented on one screen of a dual- monitor computer, while the website to be evaluated will be presented on the other.

9. Interfaces for Surveys and Census The United States Census has plans to move a large portion of its data collection to online. As a part of that, they are evaluating a web form for census data. In order to avoid collecting personal data (like that typically collected in the census), we are planning a survey evaluation using data on people's pets -- specifically, dogs.

10. YMap: Dynamic Query Maps and Decision Processes Dynamic interfaces are being used for queries of databases. In this study we are looking at dynamic query maps that allow the decision maker to adjust criteria on the set to eliminate items that are not in the desired ranges of multiple attributes.

11. Sonification of Dynamic Maps Maps encoded with data are a useful tool for visual information seeking tasks. For the visually impaired, visual maps are difficult or impossible to use. This project seeks to create maps that use auditory data encoding for use by the visually impaired.

12. QUIS: lap.umd.edu/quis The Questionnaire for User Interaction Satisfaction (QUIS) was designed to assess users' subjective satisfaction with specific aspects of the human- computer interface.
