Website Pages – The tool bar Click here to insert hyperlinks Paste from word button Tables and zoning Click each piece of text for an example of how to use each button (these are also available in the appendices). The buttons that that do not have explanations are everyday buttons that you will be familiar with from word processing packages for example Microsoft word.

Paste from word The paste from word button is an important button. Whenever you create a document in word and want to place it onto your website you must use this button and not paste it directly into the dialog window. Once you push the paste from word button the paste from word webpage dialog window. Here you can paste your document as normal. When you click ok you will see it appear in the main dialog box in the correct format. To go back to the toolbar page click here.here.

1.Highlight a piece of text you have entered into your page. 2.Then click on the link icon in the toolbar Links are a very useful tool to guide people around your site and channel them to the areas you want. And to provide links to other sites that are relevant to you. You can add links to text. Hyperlinks To go back to the toolbar page click here.here. 3.To make an External Link, choose http:// from the top dropdown menu then type in the web address in the following field. Then click insert, then OK.

4.To make the link appear in a new pop-up web page then use the Target dropdown menu with Blank (view left) Hyperlinks To go back to the toolbar page click here.here.

You may want to give some of your pages more visual impact and use the space to maximum advantage. This would be typical of your home page where visitors will make a choice as to whether they look any further. By creating visual links, using images and short bursts of text you can display more information in a more easily absorbed format. 1.Open up the editor of your chosen page and put the cursor in the space you wish to format. Then simply click on the Table button. 2.A box appears with a grid. Choose how you wish to divide up the page. Here it is using 2 columns and 4 rows. Click on the grid Tables zoning pages and aligning content... To go back to the toolbar page click here.here.

3.Put the cursor in the top left cell. Click on the Edit Table button and choose Edit Cell. Here you can adjust various positioning parameters. Tables zoning pages and aligning content... 16 Tables zoning pages and aligning content... On the properties tab you have several options. You can choose the alignment of your text here You can place padding into your cells here, padding is spacing around your item in the cell. (We recommend using a 5px padding on all sides when using boxes to tidy up the content.) Here you can choose a background colour for the cell Here you can choose the text format and place a border around your cells.

Tables zoning pages and aligning content... At the bottom of the box you have the option to apply your changes to either the current row, current cell, current column or to the whole table. When you have made the changes you want to click apply and ok.

6.The page has now been divided into 8 cells which are padded so the contents of one cell will not touch another and the cells have been aligned centrally. 7.We can now insert text. Click in the first cell and enter some text. You can enter text into each of the cells and you will see the padding and centre alignment remains 8.Update, to save the changes you have made. 9.There are other placement options within the table options so experiment with these to get the results you require. 19 Tip. Before creating a page in this way design it first. Get a sheet of paper and draw out how you want the page to look by separating it into rectangles. (You have to use rectangles/squares because this is how tables are structured.) Decide whether you want text or images in each section. Decide how large the images are going to be, and what size font you need depending on the volume of text. If you want to give the impression the page is not split into rectangles then you can use images which float on a white background. There are endless ways to zone your page depending on what and/or how much information you wish to display. Tables zoning pages and aligning content... 20 Tip. Another tip when thinking about how your pages are laid out is using bullet points. This is very good way of getting across key textual information for a number of reasons… It separates larger paragraphs giving people bite sized pieces of information This is good because peoples concentration span is limited on the web You use less ‘filler’ text so your keywords are more concentrated (this is covered in-depth later) Tip. Don’t get too carried away with huge text sizes and using bright colours. Although this can work with some websites, generally it does not look professional. Your website has been designed with a standard font size and colour to give it continuity. Use larger text sizes for headers and key points but don’t go larger than size 3 or 4. (Unless you are aiming your content at visually impaired people) Everything is relative – if your main font is large then to make text stand out from it you will have to use an even larger font. If your main font is a normal size then you need only increase your header/key text font to size 3, possibly 4 and bold it. With header/key text you can also pick a colour which could be part of your branding for example, and use that throughout sparingly. Tables zoning pages and aligning content...
