Day three Organelles of boundary, control, assembly, transport and support. Caylor

Journal 3 Explain STEP-BY-STEP how to properly prepare a wet slide. (Hint: think about your “e” slide)

Organelles of boundary or control CELL (PLASMA) MEMBRANE : thin, flexible barrier between cell and environment -controls movement in and out of cell -selectively permeable

CELL WALL: outer boundary found only in plant cells, bacteria and fungi Thick and inflexible Provides support for plant cell

NUCLEUS: controls all functioning of the cell “brain” of the cell Contains DNA which is usually all tangled up in the form of CHROMATIN The nucleus is surrounded by the NUCLEAR MEMBRANE which controls what enters and leaves the nucleus

NUCLEOLUS: dark region inside the nucleus Produces ribosomes RIBOSOMES: organelle which controls manufacturing of proteins Interprets code from RNA

Organelles of assembly, transport and support. CYTOPLASM: liquid portion of cell; gives the cell some shape Site of most chemical reactions

ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM:(ER) Folded membrane forming a network of connected tubes Delivery system for cell Rough ER: studded with ribosomes, transports proteins Smooth ER: has no ribosomes

GOLGI APPARATUS: Stacked, flattened sacs Stores and distributes materials into vacuoles

VACUOLES: temporary storage areas for food, water, enzymes and wastes Special types: Contractile vacuole: pumps out excess water in single-celled water dwelling organisms Central vacuole: large vacuole found in plants used for water storage

LYSOSOME: “killer” cells Contain digestive enzymes that digest excess or worn out cell parts, food or invaders

Quiz 3 1.Plant cells contain ___ while animal cells only have a cell membrane. a. only a cell wall b. both a cell wall and membrane c. only a membrane 2.Which cell organelle manufactures proteins for the cell? a. cell wall b. nucleus c. ribosomes 3.Which cell organelle is called the “killer” cell because they contain digestive enzymes? a. Golgi apparatus b. lysosomes c. ribosomes 4.The ___ is the liquid portion of the cell. a. cytoplasm b. Golgi c. lysosome 5.A vacuole which appears to be an empty circle in your microscope is probably a ___ vacuole. a. food b. waste c. water
