Objective Student will be able to explain how napoleon spread nationalism across Europe Prior Knowledge: we have learned what nationalism is and how it has caused previous revolutions

Relevancy When we talk about nationalism, we often refer to it as a fire. We say “spark” or “ignited”, why do you think that is? What other things to was apply Spark to? What is Nationalism?

Congress of Vienna When Napoleon was finally defeated, all the victorious nations met to decide how to “clean up” 3 goals reestablished the balance of power to Europe restored the monarchs removed by Napoleon suppressed the democratic movement (freedom)

Napoleon Bonaparte's Legacy Congress of Vienna was too little, too late As result of Napoleon’s conquest of Europe, nationalist feelings were ignited. It is confusing the way this works out, we will break it down into three ways

1. Weakened governments Countries were left with little strength after fighting Napoleon’s Armies Easy for lower classes to revolt on weak rulers

2. Inspires unity As much as Europe did not like Napoleon, they are inspired by his ability to unify his country Equality and Brotherhood, all similar peoples united under one nation instead of tiny squabbling rulers “We were weak because we were divided into small kingdoms, if we unite into one big nation…”

3. Forced culture and pay taxes Non-French parts of Europe were forced to adopt French ideas. Napoleonic Code is a great example Forced to pay taxes to France Forced to serve in the French Army

Closure/Review We have learned what the Congress of Vienna was and its objectives. We have learned and elaborated on three ways napoleon inspired nationalism.

Assignment Explain how Napoleon inspired nationalism across Europe. On the back, create a cartoon showing how Napoleon inspired nationalism across Europe.
