2  Describe the system used for naming and classifying plants.  Identify the major groups of plants.  Describe the differences between annuals, biennials, and perennials. Our Objectives

3  Classified based on similarities  There are seven categories plans can be grouped in  Kingdom  Phylum a.k.a divison  Class  Order  Family  Genus  Species  Variety How are plants classified?

4  Even though we can categorize plants in 7 different categories, we only use 2 names  The genius (1 st letter always capitalized)  The species (not capitalized)  Both are italicized  This type of naming system is called binomial nomenclature and was developed by Carolus Linnaeus  Plants often have common names by vary from regions to languages How are plants named?

5 What are some ways that we can put plants into groups?  Bryophytes- non vascular plants ex: mosses  Like dampness  Small  Ferns- vascular plant  Reproduce through spores  Gymnosperms- reproduce through seeds  Usually reproduces with a cone  When reproduction is used with a cone it is known as a conifer  Angiosperms- seed plants whose seeds develop within a fruit  Have a flower Vocabulary -Deciduous- losses leaves in winter -Evergreen- keeps leaf’s all year -Dicots- plants with 2 cotyledons in their seed - flowers in multiples of 4-5, netted veins, and stems which are organized in a ring pattern ex: roses, petunias, geraniums -Monocots- single cotyledon -flowers in 3’s, parallel veins, narrow leaves Ex: grasses, sweet corn, lilies

6  Plants can be classified by life cycle  Annuals- grown from seed, flower, reproduce seeds, die  They have a herbaceous stem which means there is no woody tissue in them  Biennials- live for 2 years, flower, die  Perennials- live for 3 or more years, herbaceous or woody stem What is the difference between an annual, biennial, and perennial?
