German Outreach Report Michael Kobel Bonn University OPAL, ATLAS, D0 European Particle Physics Outreach Group Meeting, Vienna, 10.10.2003 Outreach Funding in Germany Web Page Status Web Page Status KET Report on Future of Particle Physics in Germany KET Report on Future of Particle Physics in Germany Physics on Stage: Science on Stage e.V. Germany Physics on Stage: Science on Stage e.V. Germany University Online Lectures „Physics 2000“ University Online Lectures „Physics 2000“

Outreach funding in Germany April 2003: first official outreach application to BMBF 23 k€ / year corresponding to 0.2% of total HEP support (equiv. to 1 Ph.D. student position) seems to have been in largest parts successful (final word this month) Projects: maintenance of www.teilchenphysik.orgwww.teilchenphysik.org particle physics experiments for schools: Kamiokanne measurement of cosmic muons: –angular distribution –life time of muons material CD for schools masterclass competition WYP 2005 (travel) support for physics teachers at CERN  financing letter has to be accompagnied by a national letter  first proof to make sensible things with it before asking for more Th. Trefzger (Uni Mainz)

Outreach Web Pages http://www.teilchenphysik.info or.org and new:.de http://www.teilchenphysik News and events News and events to be announced remotely by each institute News and events archive for each year available well accepted by organizers Forum for teachers Forum for teachers discuss particle physics in high school comment available school material not used… Publicize Site wore widely 02/03 150  750 visits/month 4Mb  50 Mb transfer /month

KET Report on Future of HEP in Germany Complete Review of current state and future Suggested and funded by reasearch ministry NOW: available printed and on CD in English Written by physicists +1 science writer: 120pg. NOW: available printed and on CD in English http://www.dpg-physik.de/fachgremien/t/ket/ketStudie/ket-study.html http://www.dpg-physik.de/fachgremien/t/ket/ketStudie/ket-study.html For: scientists (non-physicists) colleagues physics students scientific educated public funding agencies and advisory panels Graphics by DESY (HH/Zeuthen) + graphics bureau very nice graphics for outreach! http://www.dpg-physik.de/fachgremien/t/ket/ketStudie/bilder.html http://www.dpg-physik.de/fachgremien/t/ket/ketStudie/bilder.html Publically presented in a symposium on 22.11.02 in Bonn talks (in German) available on the web http://www.dpg- physik.de/fachgremien/t/ket/veranstaltungen/hep_symposium.html http://www.dpg- physik.de/fachgremien/t/ket/veranstaltungen/hep_symposium.html

Science on Stage e.V. Germany (SonS) Old German tradition: have a club for everything: founded non-profit association “Science on Stage Germany e.V.” get more recognition in the public make easier to gain funding from third parties first public appearance at the Science Days in the “Europa-Park Rust” near Freiburg. from October 16 to 18 some ten thousands of students, teachers and families visit present a small part of the German contribution to POS 3 informing about the aims of SonS: promote the education in technology and the natural sciences in school and society on a national and european level organize events, workshops and symposia increase activities in the field of public and media Got a technical coordinator’s position from metal industry: Poststrasse 4/5, Berlin

Online university lectures and remote lab experiments 3-years BMBF project: „Physics 2000“, ending 2004 http://www.physics2000.de http://www.physics2000.de Content: Siegen, Berlin, Bonn, Dortmund, Jena, Rostock Evaluation: Berlin, Jena, Rostock Program: „new media“ in university teaching aim: network of universities in teaching of research and applied physics first steps for internationalisation of study first steps for internationalisation of study (to be translated 2004: Lancaster) Development Phase: create 14 internet-based teaching modules, mostly cross-topic (Medicine-physics, Astro-particle, etc.) create / improve 15 advanced lab course experiments available at 1 place only develop concepts of combined teaching remote and locally communication platforms evaluation

Example: Bubble Chamber Experiment, Bonn Original: > 1000 Bubble Chamber Photos in 3 differnt views on original film Projektion table to view single and overlay / move several photos Radius-“Schablonen“ Ruler Virtual, remote: ca 500 scanned photos (jpg) overlay / move / zoom on PC screen Analyse with Java Applicationen, via mouse

Realisation of bubble chamber experiment Manual and Preparation (web-based): online Tasks: measurement of beam profile and cross-section for 24 GeV/c protons measurement of charged and neutral multiplicity measurement of  momentum in a     e decay at rest identification of a “ V 0 “-decay, e.g. pp  p  +  0,  0  p  - Introductory test per video link by tutor “Experiment“: locally at PC analysis: offline Program just for measuring, student should think him/herself results: sent per e-mail oder s-mail to tutor Different event samples (100 aus 500) provide copying Possibly final video discussion

Status Most modules / experiments ready by end of 2003 2004: Test phase and evaluation Translation into English (funding provided) Complete overview: http://www.physics2000.de/  Lehrangebote http://www.physics2000.de/ Lehrangebote

Summary Outreach Funding in Germany first success! Outreach Funding in Germany first success!
