3 neela.matin@york.ac.uk www.afritest.net Social Equity -> Sustainable Transport A paradigm shift is needed - from a focus on private motorisation to livelihood- based environment-friendly transport needs of the poor men and women - from a reliance on market based indicators for transport planning to behaviour based indicators that reflect differential transport uses of different social groups.

Provides basic access and development with safe, affordable, efficient means Offers choice of modes, competition, balanced spatial development Cares for human and ecosystem health Limits emissions within limits of planet’s absorption capacity Promotes equity within and between generations True sustainable transport can contribute to equity through a focus on Millennium Development Goals, i.e., Alleviating poverty and hunger Achieving universal primary education Contributing to gender equity through improved mobility Improving health, environmental sustainability Developing partnerships though linking people and places.

5 neela.matin@york.ac.uk www.afritest.net Recognising Co-benefits Co-benefits of sustainable transport and social equity Sustainable transport can Abate air-pollution Enhance health protection and reduce accidents Improve productivity and reduce poverty ………. However, more evidence is needed to expand the link between equity and sustainability. TEST Network welcomes knowledge sharing to expand the evidence base for this research and identify benefits that an equitable transport paradigm can offer. Thank you for your kind attention.
