3. In the beginning… Genesis 1:1 Genesis means “beginning” or “origin”
Created means to “make out of nothing”

Only God can make something out of nothing

God’s power is beyond our understanding
Nothing too hard for God
How did God know how to make all this?
We have to learn how to make things

God knows and completely understands everything
Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Heb. 11:3By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.
Jer. 32:17"Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.
Rom. 11:33Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! Note: Bring building materials

4. The earth, when first created
Genesis 1:2
No form or shape
Covered by darkness
Covered with water
No dry land
No life anywhere
2The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was[1] on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
Turn out light to simulate darkness

5. God was ready to make everything
God is all-powerful
God moved upon the face of the waters
We cannot understand God’s mighty power
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit all took part in creation
Trinity is beyond our understanding

6. The first day: light Genesis 1:3 Genesis 1:4 Genesis 1:5
Only God could create simply by speaking
Light is a wonderful creation

It was good
Everything God made is perfect
God is perfect

Divided light/darkness

Darkness = “night”
God created light, not sun, on this day

7. The second day: firmament
Genesis 1:6-8
God created air and sky
God merely spoke to create firmament

6Then God said, "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters." 7Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. 8And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.

8. Conclusion
Man’s idea of how the world came to be are changing all the time
God’s true written history has not changed
He was there
He told us in His Word that He created everything
God is greater and more powerful than all
