Name _____________________________Date _____________Line ________ Biology Website: www.burgiobiology.wikispaces.com Access homework assignments, quizzes/tests, review, etc. You will be learning a great deal this year. This class will be a combination of lecture, projects, and hands on activities. In order to be successful in this class you must abide by the rules and be cooperative. THIS IS A REGENTS CLASS!! You must take a Regents exam at the year. YOU NEED TO PASS THIS CLASS TO GRADUATE so PLEASE take it SERIOUSLY!! Behavior At all times you are expected to be respectful to the teacher as well as your peers. If at any time you become disrespectful in any way or break a rule consistently, a phone call will be made to your parent or guardian informing them of the problem. Further action will be taken if the problem is not solved. GENERAL RULES: 1. Please stay in your seat at all times unless you ask permission (this even includes sharpening a pencil or throwing away a tissue!) 2. Speak RESPECTFULLY to the teacher as well as your peers 3. Please do not have ANY side conversations that are not academically related 4. Respect school property 5. Keep the room clean meaning: Clean up after a lab or activity, do not eat or drink, and do not throw anything onto the floor or around the room (including paper) 6. NO CELL PHONES OR IPODS ARE TO BE USED DURING CLASS!! TOC (Table of Contents) Binders You are required to purchase a 3 ring 1 or 1 and 1/2 inch binder. This will be your notebook for the class. They will be labeled with a table of contents and checked periodically for a participation grade. A copy of the binder will be kept in the room with a complete table of contents if you are absent or missing work. There is NO excuse for an incomplete notebook

“Do Now” When you arrive in the room, there will either be directions on the board for you to take something out or get something ready. It is expected that as the bell rings, you are ready for class. On days that homework is checked, you will have a question on the board for you to answer. There will be a special sheet for recording these questions and answers and will be counted in your class-work grade. Quizzes and Tests Quizzes are given occasionally to assess a specific topic. These quizzes will be approximately 10 questions and will cover something that has recently been discussed. You will receive 1-2 days notice for a quiz. Quizzes are generally worth 20 points. Tests are given upon the completion of a unit. Tests are worth more than quizzes but may or may not be 100 points. You will receive 3-4 days notice of an upcoming test. Grading Each assignment has a point value. These points will be added up and 4 grades are determined. Each of these grades is weighted equally Homework - 25% Tests and quizzes - 25% Class-work assignments - 25% Other Assignments (projects, notebook checks, participation) - 25% Burgio Buck Assignments Burgio Buck assignments are extra credit assignments. Every week an assignment will be posted in the Burgio Buck folder. It is your responsibility to take the assignment and complete it at your own leisure. It will be posted on Monday and it will be taken no later than Friday that same week. The assignment can be completed and handed to me at any time that week. I will look it over and if it is satisfactory it will be handed back to you with a Burgio Buck. Save your Burgio Bucks in a safe place because after you collect 3 you can exchange them for 10 bonus points on a test. You can gain up to 30 bonus points per quarter.

Homework Homework is given about 2 to 3 times a week. When homework is given it is expected the next day, or on the due date provided. Homework is not usually long and takes between 5 and 30 minutes to complete. Longer assignments are worth 10 points and shorter assignments are worth 5 points. LATE HOMEWORK - Late homework is always accepted if you were absent the day it is due. If you were present and did not hand in the homework you have one week to hand it in. After one week it is not accepted and counts as a 0. Do not copy homework, it will not be accepted. Do not let homework assignments pile up as it becomes impossible to complete them. Absences If you are absent, you are still responsible for the work/notes done that day. There will be folders in the room with the days of the week written on them and the work will be in that folder. You must take the work out, put it in your binder, and record it in the table of contents. If it was an assignment, it must be completed to earn credit. It is your responsibility to find out what was covered in your absence. The room binder is always available. Lates If you are late to class you MUST bring a pass. There is NO excuse for not having a pass. You must abide by the school rules regarding being late to class. I have read through the classroom rules and regulations for the class. I understand them and will follow them Student Signature __________________________________ Date _____________ I have read through the Biology classroom rules and regulations for my child and I understand them Parent/Guardian Signature _______________________________ Date _________

Name ______________________________________Date _______________ Materials You don’t need to purchase anything for the lab portion of the class. You will receive a colored folder from the teacher that will NEVER LEAVE THE ROOM. This will be your lab folder for the year. All labs and activities done during the class will be kept in this folder and graded upon completion. Class Requirements This class is required in order for you to be eligible to take the Regents exam. You must complete 1200 minutes of lab time during the course of the year. This will be achieved if you are coming to class during your lab time. If this is not achieved, but you still pass the class, you may be un-eligible to take the exam. You will receive a lab time record sheet and it will be kept in your folder. Every day of lab we will record the amount of time that you will be working onto the record sheet along with the date. The time box will be stamped for approval and there will be no question as to how much time you have completed in lab. You may also keep track of your own time in this way. Absence If you are absent on a lab day you must make up the work. This may mean working with your group to get caught up. Also, 90% of our labs will last more than 1 day. This means that if you are absent on day 1 then you will be lost on day 2. It is your responsible to catch yourself up by asking another student in your lab group to help you or visiting me on my non-teaching time. A copy of the lab folder is always present in the room.

Purpose: This is a hands-on laboratory class. However, science activities may have potential health hazards. We will use some equipment and animals that may be dangerous if not handled properly. Safety in the science lab is an important part of the scientific process. To ensure a safe classroom, a list of rules has been developed and is called the Science Safety Contract. These rules must be followed at all times. Additional safety instructions will be given for each activity. No student will be allowed to participate in the lab until this contract has been signed by both the student and a parent/guardian. Safety Rules: 1.Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times. There is NO horseplay 2.Follow ALL instructions carefully and ASK if you are confused! 3.Do not touch any equipment, supplies, animals, or other materials without the teacher’s permission 4.Perform only authorized experiments 5.NEVER eat, drink, chew gum, or taste anything in the lab 6.Keep hands away from face, eyes, and mouth while using science materials 7.ALWAYS wash your hands when you leave the lab 8.Wear safety goggles when instructed 9.Keep the work area neat and clean during the experiment and make sure everything is returned to its original area and cleaned at the end of an experiment

Safety Rules (continued) 10.Follow the teacher’s instructions of waste disposal 11.Consider all chemicals used in the lab as dangerous. Never touch or smell a chemical 12.Carry microscopes with both hands 13.Treat preserved specimens and dissection supplies with care and respect 1.Never remove specimens from the lab 2.Use all sharp instruments with utmost care and respect 3.Never cut materials towards you, always away from you 4.Report a cut to the teacher IMMEDIATELY 14.Never open cabinets in the lab without permission 15.Do not remove any chemicals, equipment, supplies, or animals from the science room 16.Handle glassware with care. If it is hot or broken, use caution! 17.Use caution with hot plates 18.Dress properly - Long hair must be put back, take off any dangling jewelry, and do not wear baggy clothing 19.Learn where all safety equipment is located. This includes fire blankets, eye washes, and showers 20.It is in your best interest to wear glasses on lab days as opposed to contacts. If we ever work with chemicals and it splashes in the eye, contact wearers are more likely to have a serious injury I have read the contract and understand the rules. They will be followed at all times.
