European nations had large armies and flaunted their strength by using them Mobilization (preparing for war) efforts began to take place near the turn of the century

3 33 Remember that this is a worldwide war and therefore there are many more countries that are involved but not listed. Note that America joined the triple entente otherwise called the allies. Alliances Alliance*Countries that join an agreement to stick up for each other which helps strengthen the country to try and prevent attack Alliances divided Europe into competing camps European nations formed alliances to help protect each other Triple Entente—France, Britain, Russia Triple Alliance—Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy

6 66 This is important because Princip is the name of the man who assassinated Archduke Ferdinand. Princip believed that if Archduke Ferdinand took over the thrown he would not support the slavic community becoming their own state. Therefore he felt that it was imperative that Fredinand never be given the opportunity to take over. Nationalism People identifying with each other because of cultural identity (language, traditions, customs, etc.) Slavic nationalism: Slavs within the Austro-Hungarian Empire began to demand their own nation (supported by Russia)

7 77 Many of these colonies were being established in Africa. European nations were essentially carving up Africa and taking what they wanted which caused strife in the African communities because no one was paying attention to the cultures when they divided the country into various countries. Imperialism Definition* a policy that allowed European nations to establish overseas colonies in order to gain wealth and power. At the last part of the 19th century, European nations sought overseas colonies to create huge empires and wealth Competition between nations for colonies would be cutthroat and lead to war

June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to Austro-Hungarian throne, was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip Princip was a member of terrorist organization Black Hand They emphasized Slavic nationalism for the Serbians (wanted a separate Serbian nation)
