How did sectionalism split the Democratic-Republican party- Each area wanted the candidate that had only thier interests in mind Sectionalism splitting the country - NE- Tariffs and transportation S- Slavery, Tariffs, Gov $$ W- Cheap land, Transportation Election of 1824/Corrupt bargain - Adams, Clay, Jackson tie for the Presidential vote. Vote goes to the H.o.Reps. Clay tells Adams that he will give his support to him in return for a job( becomes Sec. of State). Jackson’s followers heard of this and called it the Corrupt Bargain. Jacksonian democracy- widening the political power to more people. Instead of just white property owners now it was open to all “white males”. \ Spoils system - giving government jobs to political backers and friends States rights - the right of the states to make choices without the national government getting in their way Tariff of abominations - law that raised the tariffs on imported raw materials and manufactured goods

Ch. 12 sect. 1 Doctrine of nullification- allows states to reject a federal law that it thinks is unconstitutional Problems between Jackson and Calhoun- at a party Jackson declares himself a “nationalists” where as Calhoun is for a strong state gov. and weak national gov. Threats of secede- SC threatens to leave the Union because of the Tariff of abomination. Jackson gets rid of the tariff to appease the south.

Ch. 12 Sect. 2 Ways the Cherokee changed to fit into the white community - way of dress, slaves, farming, eating habits, religion, literacy( made their own language), schooling, built houses, made a government much like the US’s. Constitution, 3 branches, married into the whites. Jacksons removal policy- Thought the N.A.’s had 2 choices either become “white citizens” or move west. Gold found on Cherokee Res. The N.A’s stand up for their rights and are put down by the military and Georgians. Will lose all belongs to these invaders Indian Removal act- Called for the gov. to negotiate treaties that would require them to relocate west Trail of Tears- the harsh journey of the Cherokee from their homeland to their new Reservation in Ok. N.A. resistance- The NA’s are stepping up to fight back against the invasion on Native land.

5. Ch. 12 sect. 3 National Bank- Biggest bank in the US and most powerful. Made loans to members of congress. Jackson says bank is too powerful and declares “war” on the bank. Biddle’s Charter- Biddle needs a charter from the Gov. to run his bank. Asked congress to renew his charter and Jackson tells him no chance. Jackson pulls all government $$ out of the bank and places it in state banks. End of Biddle’s Bank- Jackson wins re-election and take it as a sign of approval on his ‘war” against the N.B. Biddle makes it harder for people to borrow money. Biddle’s bank loses this battle but all Americans will suffer from this fight. Panic of 1837- With all the money placed in state banks it was easier for people to borrow money. Too much paper money printed and inflation hit. After awhile people started to exchange the paper money for gold and silver. Almost all factories close in the NE.

6. Whig party- made up of Jackson opponents who believed Congress not the President represented the will of the people. 1840 Election- William Henry Harrison and John Tyler run for the Whigs and win. Harrison was portrayed as a Western farmer(far from it). Becomes 1 st president to die of natural causes in office. John Tyler becomes the 1 st VP to reach the presidency.
