2 Purpose of today’s meeting:  To review graduation requirements  To learn about the PSAT test and why it is important  To receive a practice PSAT booklet  To learn some new study skills/techniques  To discuss post high school options  To register for the Khan Academy  To work on the Naviance program

4 High School Graduation Requirements:  English: 4 credits  Math: 4 credits (Algebra, Geometry)  Science: 3 credits (Physical, Biology)  Social Studies: 3 credits (US, NSL, Modern World)  PE: 1 credit  Health: 1/2 credit  Fine Art: 1 credit  Regular Tech Ed: 1 credit

5 High School Graduation Requirements continued…  Choose and complete at least 1 of the following completer programs:  2 credits of World Language (Spanish, French, or ASL)  4 credits of career program (Child Development, Restaurant Management, AOIT, Autotech, Horticulture, CCRD)

6 High School Graduation Requirements continued….  Take and pass the HSA/PARCC assessments  75 SSL hours  At least 22 credits

7 What are colleges looking for?  AP/honors classes  Advanced level math (Precalculus, etc.)  At least 3 years of same World Language  SAT, ACT, SAT II Subject Tests (some colleges/universities require these tests for admission).  Check with schools to see their requirements

8 PSAT Test  A practice SAT  Given nationwide on October 14 th  All 9 th, 10 th graders must take the test! 9 th graders will be taking the PSAT 8/9  Test is a good way to practice concepts and test taking strategies  Results can help with recommendations for future testing  Junior year test results can qualify a student for National Merit Scholarships  Do your best!  PSAT practice book

9 Study Skills for Testing Success  Before the test:  Practice, practice, practice!  Eat healthy, nutritious foods to boost brain power!  Get plenty of rest  During the test:  Pace yourself, be aware of the time and how much time is allotted for each section  If you do not know the answer to a question, skip it and move on! If you have time at the end, go back to those questions  Try to focus on one section at a time; try not to stress about the entire length of the test!  Try to eliminate as many answers as possible; try to narrow down to 2  If you finish early, go back and check your section

10 Post High School Plans:  College  2 or 4 year  Trade/Technical School  Military  Work  Combination  Start thinking/planning for your path!

11 Khan Academy  Free PSAT and SAT practice online  Register at: https://www.khanacademy.org/sathttps://www.khanacademy.org/sat  Provide email address to get account set up  Log into your email and open email from Khan Academy to finish creating your account

12 Naviance…  Grade 9  Register for Naviance  Enter activation code  Grades 9 and 10  About Me Tab  Resume: Add at least 1 item to your resume  My Planner Tab  Goals: Add an academic, personal/social, time management and other goals
