4 The internet & journalism
" The Internet is the world's largest library.  It's just that all the books are on the floor.  ~John Allen Paulos"     The internet is now the largest HUB for any information and since the creation of search engines information is now a lot easier to find. With information so easy to find and news so easy to distribute by anyone, the internet has had a monumental effect on journalism.   From the internet, news is available is on demand. First ever internet search engine was called Archie, first appearing on the internet in 1990 Before the internet, news was provided at 'set' times. Newspapers were about the previous day, TV and Radio where at set times, around a TV and Radio schedule.

5 The effect on Journalism
News and information distribution have dramaticly changed since the intrernet became so easily available. Has had a large effect on most major broadcasting companies, newspaper printers and radio which were the main forms of news distribution before the internet.   Where do you get your news? To compete with this a number of newspapers now have their own news webpages Creation of Citizen journalsim Everything is easily available on demand, and you can specify it to anything that particuly interests yourself. Survey taken of year olds in the London area, done by website Mashable - Business. Done is 2009, first record of the internet used more often for news distribution over newspaper. Example: Idependant The Guardian Daily Mail Mirror

6 What is citizen journalism?
To put simply citizen journalism is news distributed by the public Lego Summary This shows how easy it is for anyone to distribute news, and how it is incorporated into modern day journalism distributed by the larger corporate companies.

7 Advantages of online journalism
Fast and easy to do. Up to date - Can be posted as its happening No space limitations Low production costs Supports multimedia facilties Search based Feedback/Comments are available Internet has infinate amounts of storage Virtually no costs to running a website, compared to print productions and amount of staff required. Supports all forms of media, audio, video, text, opinion polls, blogs, forums and keep news distribuation varied and extremely informative if different are used for the same story. Everything is archived and findable. Allows for opinions to be discussed and 2 way conversations between journalists and readers to open up. One other would be no more control over what is distributed.

8 Disadvantages... No credable mediums Ethical Issues
Ethical Issues Information overload Only available if you have a computer and internet access Copyright Alongside trusted news websites there are many which post up very flimsy pieces of jorunalism. No use of verifaction or facts, anyone can post anything and claim it to be true/correct. Can lead to bais opinions. Stating information which could be wrong or seen offensive. Too much information is available and if used can lead to no viable conclusions in a story/article or can lead to being to long full of unessesary facts.

9 Copyright Issues One of the biggest problems with information being so easy to distribute is plagiarism  "The Internet has been characterized as the largest threat to copyright since its inception. The Internet is awash in information, a lot of it with varying degrees of copyright protection. Copyrighted works on the Net include new s stories, software, novels, screenplays, graphics, pictures, Usenet messages and even . In fact, the frightening reality is that almost everything on the Net is protected by copyright law. That can pose problems for the hapless surfer." ("The Copyright Web site" Plagiarism is the the act of stealing and passing off the ideas, words, or other work by another as one's own.
