2 Bellwork: Thurs/Fri, Aug. 13/14 Copy the following notes onto a clean sheet of paper. What is a preposition? A preposition describes: TIME: –at midnight –during the movie. LOCATION: –in New York. –on the floor. DIRECTION: –through the window. –past the Post Office. 1050 click here to start timer

3 Objects of the Preposition To find the object, ask What? The plane soared above the clouds. The mouse ran under the dresser to get away. Beneath the starlit sky, the lake sparkled. Every preposition has an object. Add the following to your notes. Above what?

4 Which sentence contains a prepositional phrase? Jack and Jill went up the hill. Jack fell down and broke his crown! If you think a word is a preposition, but it doesn’t have an object, then it’s not a preposition!

5 A prepositional phrase will NEVER contain a verb or the subject! Write the numbers of the correct prepositional phrases. 1.Freshmen often find themselves lost in the hallways of the main building. 2.In their agendas, there is a campus map. 3.They should reference it to find their way around.

6 WHOLE-GROUP PRACTICE: Underline the prepositional phrases. Circle the prepositions. Place a box around the objects. 1.Somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue. 2.The fluffy, white clouds raced across the horizon. 3.A brilliant rainbow rested in the clear, blue sky. 4.My favorite shirt was in the trunk of my car. 5.Don’t forget your keys; they’re on the table.

Then puddles formed, and in the low places little lakes formed in the fields. The muddy lakes rose higher, and the steady rain whipped the shining water.
