1 Scientific Methods These are the steps scientists follow in order to answer questions and solve problems about the natural world

2 Step 1: Ask a Question or Make an Observation
What are you curious about? Is there anything you are curious about, like what fruits have a higher concentration of vitamin C? Or does vitamin C evaporate? Or, could something in the water be causing the frogs’ deformities?

3 Not just any question, but a scientific question..
Which is a question about the natural world that can be answered by gathering evidence.

4 Make Observations After posing the question about the frogs having deformities in the pond, a student might want to make further observations. They could count the number of normal and the number of deformed frogs they caught, photograph the frogs, take measurements, and write a detailed description of them They could collect pond samples and test for pollutants or acidity levels Record Data

5 Step 2: Form a hypothesis
This is the step that involves forming a possible explanation for a set of observations or answer to a researchable question A good hypothesis is based on observations and can be tested and is always a statement, not a question. A hypothesis statement for the frogs could be: Pollution in the water must be the cause of the decline of the frog population

6 Step 3- Make Predictions
What are some statements that explain or confirm your hypothesis?

7 Step 4- Design Tests or Experiments
Designing Experiments-This is where you make a specific, complete plan for testing a hypothesis After you carry out the experiment, then you will interpret the data which means you find meaning in the data by looking for patterns or trends. Data- is the information gained through observations and measurements

8 Step 5- Drawing Your Conclusions
After you interpret data by finding meaning in patterns or trends, then you will state your conclusions. Now you Draw Conclusions- This means you will make a statement that sums up what you have learned from an experiment.
