She wrote pamphlets to lawmakers using men to be her voice in legislative sessions. She traveled from Massachusetts to South Carolina visiting prisons and perpetuating reform. At 59, she was appointed as the chief administrator over the nurses for the Union Army. By the end of her career, she founded or expanded over thirty mental hospitals in both the United States and the world.
