8.  She wrote pamphlets to lawmakers using men to be her voice in legislative sessions.  She traveled from Massachusetts to South Carolina visiting prisons and perpetuating reform.  At 59, she was appointed as the chief administrator over the nurses for the Union Army.  By the end of her career, she founded or expanded over thirty mental hospitals in both the United States and the world.
