NETWORK COMPONENTS Assignment #3

Hub A hub is used in a wired network to connect Ethernet cables from a number of devices together. The hub allows each device to talk to the others. Hubs aren't used in networks with only wireless connections, since network devices such as routers and adapters communicate directly with one another. A hub may be used in an environment with limited data drops, such as a home office. Prices can range from $20 to $200 depending on number of ports and features.

Switch A network switch (sometimes known as a switching hub) is a computer networking device that is used to connect devices together on a computer network by performing a form of packet switching. A switch is considered more advanced than a hub because a switch will only send a message to the device that needs or requests it, rather than broadcasting the same message out of each of its ports. Switches are found in a variety of environments, most often in business offices. Prices vary depending on number of ports, manufacturer, and feather set. Switches can be as little as $50 or as much as $3000

Router Routers connect networks. A router links computers to the Internet, so users can share the connection. A router acts as a dispatcher, choosing the best path for information to travel so it's received quickly. Routers are prolific and used in almost every environment where access to the internet or to other network resources is needed. Router prices vary depending on use, manufacturer, and feature set. Home routers typically cost under $100, but routers can run into the thousands.

Bridge A network bridge is a network device that connects multiple network segments. A bridge allows devices on different subnets communication between each other. Bridges are often used in multi purpose use environments such as voice network and data networks. Or environments where users are physically separated in different buildings or locations. A bridge can be easily found for $50.

Gateway In computer networking, a gateway is a node (a router) on a TCP/IP network that serves as an access point to another network. A default gateway is the node on the computer network that the network software uses when an IP address does not match any other routes in the routing table. Gateways are used in almost any environment where internet access or access outside the local network is needed. Prices can vary depending on features, manufacturers and use. Prices can range from $1,000 to tens of thousands.

Firewall In computing, a firewall is a software or hardware-based network security system that controls the incoming and outgoing network traffic based on applied rule set. A firewall establishes a barrier between a trusted, secure internal network and another network (e.g., the Internet) that is not assumed to be secure and trusted. Firewalls are used to prevent harmful traffic from reaching the local network and often used to control specific types of traffic from coming and going. In a business environment, firewalls are often a piece of hardware running a specific type of software. In the home networking environment, firewalls are usually software that run on the user’s machine, although it can be a hardware appliance. Cost varies depending on the complexity of the hardware and software. Software solutions for home users can be quite affordable somewhere between $30 - $50. Firewall appliances can be upwards of $1000.

Wireless Access Point In computer networking, a wireless Access Point is a device that allows wireless devices to connect to a wired network using Wi-Fi, or related standards. The Access Point usually connects to a router (via a wired network) as a standalone device, but it can also be an integral component of the router itself. Wireless access points are often used to provide access to wireless devices such as cell phones, laptops, and networked printers. They are most common among home users due to a less restrictive security environment. Access points come in many varieties and can be purchased generally for under $50.
