3 Skills for Life Support Programme Learning outcomes An understanding of the importance of employability skills The opportunity to: –consider how provision can be responsive to employers and learners –explore organisational strengths and constraints that will influence your model –identify a best fit model for your organisation –plan next steps. An awareness of current employability skills resources The opportunity to begin development work in one of your priority areas for development identified through the training: –employability skills assessment –employability promotional materials –work experience. 3

4 Skills for Life Support Programme Employability: policy and context (1) The UK commission believes that a central part of what all publicly funded training should do is to develop the ability to use knowledge and skills in the workplace effectively. The Employability Challenge, 2009 The shift: the focus has moved from getting people back into work quickly to improving individuals skills to gain sustainable employment. 4

5 Skills for Life Support Programme Employability skills: policy and context (2) The Employability challenge report found that although some schools, colleges, universities and training providers prepare their students well for the workplace, too many do not. Employers spend time and money training new recruits in everyday skills, such as taking a telephone message or writing a report. The shift: employability is about making sure learners are work ready and not just job ready. 5

6 Skills for Life Support Programme Employability Skills: What? Employability skills are the skills almost everyone needs to do almost any job. UKCES, 2009 They are the skills that make specific knowledge and technical skills fully productive. Without employability skills, UK Plc ceases to be a global economic force and individuals dont get and progress in rewarding jobs. UKCES, 2009 6

8 Skills for Life Support Programme Getting started: Key resources In project management terminology, resources are required to carry out the project tasks. They can be people, equipment, facilities, funding, or anything capable of definition. Wikipedia 8

9 Skills for Life Support Programme Activity: Explore learner needs and programme models Work in groups Read the example programme models for ideas Define your own learners and write a summary on the blank template Design a delivery model that suits their needs Write a summary of it on the blank template Take 30 minutes. 9

10 Skills for Life Support Programme Activity: Audit of a whole-organisation approach to employability Complete HO7 Give each statement a grade from 1–5 using the scale: 1. Fully developed 2. Partially developed 3. Just begun development 4. Development identified, not begun 5. No development identified. You have 10 minutes. 10
