Strategies for Rapid Scale up of Nuclear Capacity U C Muktibodh Executive Director (Engg.) NPCIL 5 th Nuclear Energy Conclave, New Delhi 06 Sept 2013

Inspiration for Growth Electricity Demand Clean source of energy Sustainability Energy security

Present Status of Nuclear Power  20 reactors (18 PHWRs+2BWR) 4,780 4,780 at 6 sites in operation at Tarapur, Rawatbhata, Kalpakkam, Narora, Kakrapar and Kaiga  2 PWRs under advanced stage of completion 2,000 6,780 at Kudankulam (2x1000 MW)  PFBR under construction at 500 7,280 Kalpakkam (1 X 500 MW)  Projects construction Launched (XI Plan) 2,800 KAPP-3&4 (2x700 MW PHWR) RAPS-7&8 (2x700 MW PHWR) Total by 2017 10,080 MW CAPACITY (MW) CUMULATIVE CAPACITY(MW) REACTOR TYPE AND CAPACITY

Nuclear Capacity – Under Construction & Planned in XII Plan KK-1&2 : 2x1000 MW LWR KAPP-3&4 : ( 2x700 MW PHWR) RAPP-7&8 (2x700 MW PHWR) 500 MW PFBR Planned to be launched in XII Plan- 2x1000 MW LWR, Kudankulam, TN 2x1650 MW LWR, Jaitapur, Maharashtra 2x1500 MW LWR: Kovvada, AP 2x1100 MW LWR : Mithi Virdi,Gujarat 2x700 MW PHWR : Gorakhpur,Haryana 2x700 MW PHWR :Chutaka,M.P 2x700 MW PHWR :Mahi-Banswara, Raj 2x700 MW PHWR : Kaiga,Karnataka 2X500 MW FBR: Kalpakkam, TN 1X300 AHWR: Site being identified Advanced Stage of completion Under construction 2000 MW 3300 MW 17,400 MW(Planned) 22,700 MW (Construction + Planned) Units under construction will be completed in XII Plan.

NPPs in Operation & under Construction

PHWR Site LWR Site FBR Site NPPs under Planning

Nuclear Power Programme Three stage nuclear power programme PHWRs in the first stage

Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors Evolved through plant sizes of 220, 540 to the present 700 MWe Matured indigenous technology with impeccable safety record Standardised plant size of 700 MWe Standard plant design Exploring single or two standard seismic designs Use of Integrated Engineering Environment tools for engineering Project implementation through Mega ePC packages Target construction period of 5 years

FOR 2012-13 A.F = 90.43 %

Continuous Run (more than a year) RAPS 5 - 400 days (continuing)

Light Water Reactors LWRs, as additionalities, being implemented through international collaboration. Business model formulated for optimisation of cost and for meeting design & safety requirements.

Strategies Public outreach programs CSR activities Early Site selection and commencement of Pre-project activities Design standardisation Supply chain support Project implementation

Support from Industry Indian industry has developed capability to supply NPP equipment & components The rapid expansion programme will require industry support for maintaining supply chain for high quality equipment, meeting project schedules.

Conclusion NPCIL is poised for the rapid expansion programme Synergy between NPCIL and Indian industry is a key element to meet the programme The programme can be realised in a national mission mode with the support of all stakeholders

THANK YOU
