2. Introduction Dental prosthesis is an artificial replacement of one or more teeth. There are many types of prosthesis. They can be fixed or removable.

3. History of Dental Prosthesis Mayan Civilzation First marks of dental implants 1951 Studies about healing process in bones, commanded by Doctor Branemark, an orthopedic. While he was researching, a tetanium metalic cilinder was screwed into a thight bone of one of the animals in the experiment. After a while of studying, he found out that titaniun screws could serve as bone anchors for teeth. First tested dental prosthesis made of titanium. It was made by Dr. Branemark. 1965

4. History of Dental Prosthesis Dr. Branemark first published his studies, and people started trustig more dental prosthesis. This is when 90% of confirmed dental implants were succesfull. 1981 Since 1980 until nowadays, dental prosthesis keep getting better, with technologies to improve everything: comfort, appearence, etc.

5. Types: Crowns When a tooth is damaged or broken, the dentist places a cap or a crown made of resin on it, that gives back the real appearence and function of the tooth.

6. Type: Bridges When more than one teeth are lost, the dentist will replace it with a bridge of resin teeth. Some types of bridges may be removable.

7. Dental Implants Dental implants are advised when one or several teeth are lost. They consist of metal anchors, usually titanium, placed in the jawbone.

8. Removable Prosthesis They are the least expensive because they don´t require surgery. Also known as “dentadura” in Brazil. Nowadays its use is decreasing.

9. Pros of wearing fixed prosthesis It gives you a natural look and is very functional. It is not as unstable as removable prosthesis. It feels better. It´s long lasting. They have the same strenght as normal teeth.

10. Cons of wearing fixed prosthesis It is very expensive. It requires time for the surgery and for the healing. It is very painful. The crown needs replacement from 10 to 15 years.

11. Composition A typical prosthesis composition includes an acrylic polymeric powder in the form of small beads which is mixed by the dentist or prosthesis preparer with an acrylic monomer composition to form a paste.
