How can we be fundraising Champions and raise more money than ever before for BBC Children in Need? Bake Challenge Entertain Dress-Up

We are going to learn how to work more efficiently in a group, by using three important group roles Group FacilitatorGroup ReporterGroup Recorder Your job is to lead the discussion. You are not in charge, but you do decide whose turn it is to speak. You must make sure that everyone has their chance to share their ideas. You will be responsible for sharing the group’s ideas with the rest of the class. Make sure you keep to the point and only include the important information. You are responsible for writing down the key points which are discussed in your group. Make sure that you make a note of the important things your group says. Choose a Group Facilitator, Reporter and Recorder.

Group challenge Your task is to plan how to make and sell popcorn in school You must make it as cheaply as possible and sell it to make money for BBC Children in Need

What will you need?

Methods of producing popcorn What are the pros and cons for each of these? Putting kernels into a paper bag; folding it closed; then microwaving it Using a ready-made branded popcorn Putting kernels into a small, electric popcorn making machine Using oil in a pan on the stove, heating the kernels in the oil; covered with a lid Using branded microwave popcorn ready in a bag

Choose a group Facilitator, Reporter and Recorder to help with this task What do you think would be the cheapest way of producing popcorn to sell and why? Group task 1

Research online to investigate costs of the following for producing popcorn Bags of popcorn kernels £______ Ready made branded popcorn £_____ Microwavable popcorn £_____ Small, electric popcorn machine £_____ Brown paper bags £ _____ Names: Date:

Choose a group Facilitator, Reporter and Recorder to help with this task Calculate your costs and quantities? How many children may want to buy popcorn? Group task 2 ½ cup of kernels = 16 cups of popcorn!

Questions to think about Who will buy it? Where will you sell it? When will you sell it? How much will you sell it for? What will you sell it in (packaging)?

Choose a group Facilitator, Reporter and Recorder to help with this task How will you package it? What would be the most practical way? The cheapest way? Group task 3

Packaging ideas for your popcorn Paper Plates: 1 for 50 Plates Paper Cups: 50 for £1 1 for 2 Pens Paper cones: 4.15 for 25 1.75 for 100

Choose a group Facilitator, Reporter and Recorder to help with this task Write up a plan for your popcorn fundraiser Include all of your calculations Group task 4

Popcorn Calculations Popcorn idea details: Expenses – Money going out! Income – Money coming in! Profit – How much you make! What do you need to pay for? List ingredients Quantity Cost _______________________ _______________________ Packaging materials? Quantity Cost _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ Add up the total cost of your expenses _______________________ How much will you charge for your popcorn? _______________________ How much do you intend to sell? _______________________ Multiply the cost of one unit (portion of popcorn) by the number of customers _______________________ Remember Income – Expenses = Profit How much you expect your income to be minus the expenses = your profit for BBC Children in Need! _______________________ Names: Date:

Present your group’s plan to the rest of the class. Be ready to show all of your calculations.

In this lesson, have you… Learnt to take on different roles in a group activity? Investigated different methods of doing things? Calculated using mathematical operations?
