Cold War Timeline 1945 – World War II ended Soviet Union set up communist government in Eastern Europe. 1945 - The Cold War began, a long period of hostility between Soviet Union and democratic Western Europe. Marshall Plan – US recovery plan that offered money to help European countries recover from WWII. 1946 – Winston Churchill said, “An Iron Curtain has descended across the Continent.” The Iron Curtain was a symbolic separation between communist east Berlin and west Berlin.

Cold War Timeline 1949 – US and Western European countries formed NATO(North Atlantic Treaty Organization), a military alliance. 1955 – Soviet Union and Eastern European countries formed a military alliance called the Warsaw Pact. 1961 – East Germany built the Berlin Wall around West Berlin to prevent more European from escaping communist rule in East Germany. 1989 – After east Germany protested for a democratic change the border guards opened the gates of the Berlin Wall and later that year removed the communist government in 1989. 1990 – East and West Germany reunified
