Des Kelly: Daily Mail Beckham's PSG salary donation wasn't for charity... it was a brilliant PR stunt The concept of charity has changed over the years. It’s not just about giving time or money any more. Quite often it’s about giving ourselves a slap on the back, too. Many believe they have done their good deed for the day when they pull to the side of the road to let an ambulance pass. They are even vaguely irritated when nobody is there to see their act of generosity.

Alun Palmer: The Mirror Here oui go! 17 You have been given 20 statements about Inspector Goole, use them to debate the BIG issue The great mystery of An Inspector Calls is not who is responsible for Eva Smith’s death, but who is the Inspector and what is his role? To do this: 1.Connect the different pieces of information. 2.Explore comparisons and contrasts between these links.

So how does Priestley use the Inspector in the play? Let’s have a closer look at his final speech to help us answer this question more closely. Working individually by using your excellent skills of analysis, continue to complete your Inspector frame from last lesson. Inside = The Inspector’s attitudes and values Outside = How the Inspector is viewed by the audience and the other characters Speech Bubble = The language choices Priestley uses for the Inspector

So how does Priestley use the Inspector in the play? Inside = The Inspector’s attitudes and values Outside = How the Inspector is viewed by the audience and the other characters Speech Bubble = The language choices Priestley uses for the Inspector Some ideas to think about could be: Use of pronouns Use of repetition Word choice Rhythm of the speech (how it would be delivered)

Some ideas you might have mentioned…. Listing things in threes to make it memorable and persuasive Use of contrasting pairs (‘We don’t live alone. We are members of one body.’) Uses second person pronouns – we and us to make the audience identify with what is being said. Talks negatively about ‘they’ – people who have opinions like Mr Birling to make audience want to behave differently Use of first person pronoun ‘I’ to make audience feel that the speaker is sincere (is this ‘I’ the inspector or is this Priestley’s voice coming through?) The rhythm of the speech and where pauses are can make some phrases more forceful and memorable. It’s a speech rather than a conversation.

So the basis of his different roles, who exactly is the Inspector? He’s God He’s the voice of conscience He’s the child Eva Smith was pregnant with He’s a dream He’s Priestley He’s a time traveller He’s a real police Inspector Working with your partner, place these statements ON THE LINE Remember to justify your ideas.
